4th Edition Dungeons and Dragons was somewhat controversial due to how brusquely it shifted from 3.5e's design paradigms.

The most common canned criticism is that it made things "like an MMO" by splitting classes into specific combat roles and giving every class activated abilities to suit that role, i.e.: "Warlord" as a class that somehow healed people through what should be, by fluff, encouraging words to raise morale.

5th Edition walked everything back and just became diluted 3.5e in a desperate attempt to court its lost audience.

4th Edition is one of those things where people in an already-incredibly-gay hobby choose a subset of the hobby to be like "actually those guys are especially gay"
