If he buys DnD, I assume his first move would be to roll it back to whatever edition it was before WOTC bought it, which all of the players would probably love, right?

He just has to revert to 5e, and bundle some of the expansion books together and he'll be DnD Jesus.

WotC has owned D&D for 25 years now, most D&D players who started post-WotC prefer one of the WotC editions. If such a reversion happened in 2009 it might've gone over well, but most millennials and zoomers have only ever known/played WotC D&D.

I've been house ruling my own "DnD' for a bit now and will probably refine it at some point just to run games with my kids tbh.
