Weekly 'What are you playing' Thread #11

My game playing has assimilated into soren/playing an hourish of Battletech a week. One of the bigger mods, and the only one that is consistently updated, added a ton of stuff recently, including subfactions, completely original group of factions (still 50-50 on this), and enough random content to keep it somewhat fresh. Maybe once SoaSE2 gets out of early access (or a year later when its on Steam), I might play that, but aside from Starfield, not really feeling any games recently. Started the Gears fo War tactics game and that seems fine, though.

I've been playing way too much Cosmoteer. Building starships block by block and then having them fight hits me right in the autism. I spent like an hour redesigning my flagship yesterday - now it has a rail gun that can cleave other ships in half, which is neat!

Also continuing to chip away at the Spyro games. The Reignited Trilogy is a delight. I'm in the back third of Spyro 2 right now.

I want to play more Assetto Corsa and Microsoft Flight Simulator, but I've been too obsessed with Cosmoteer recently. There's a cool new GT500 mod for Assetto that I'm looking forward to trying.

By the way, has anybody played Starsector? I've got some free time coming up and it's been on my 'should check this out' list forever. Alternatively, I've got X4 Foundations that's been sitting on my disk for years at this point.

We're all playing Strive for the grounded footsies that the series is known for, get over here nerd

Is Strive worth? There was so much seethe both ways I could never get an idea one way or the other.

I guess it really depends on what type of FG you're into; I know that FG players can get pretty picky with their games/mechanics. Obviously, the main appeal of GG is that pretty much every character has something that's "broken," and that continues in strive. I think OG players seethed so much because it doesn't play much like an air dasher anymore, it's way more ground-based (basically, long air combos are almost not a thing). There's still plenty of air movement, but you're not gonna be spending much time doing air combos. The complexity is also toned down (another seethe point), but there is still plenty of high-level tech to learn, especially with advanced applications of Roman Cancels. Personally, I think it's great that complexity such as combo routes being opponent-specific like in Xrd was taken out (frick learning a million combo routes for Johnny), shit was just complex for complexity's sake.

So yeah, I'm a fan and IMO it's a great FG, although right now is not a great time to pick the game up because there's some lobby/hacker problems online (most likely due to the new xbox crossplay). I would wait for a sale (or get a cheap copy from a steam key shop if you are on PC). Probably not worth full price + cost of DLC, especially with SF6 around the corner. But yeah, I can totally recommend it. I got some special edition for PC from a key shop that had the base game + both DLC passes for 40 bucks, normal price for all that would have easily been double. If you just want the base game to try out, you can get it used for like 20 bucks.

Playing Bloons TD6, the new tower they added is really fun and super unique. It's very similar to x-x-4 druids and x-3-x ninjas in that you need a bunch of them together to really get them going.

Also been playing Plants vs Zombies 2, yes it has a bunch of p2w garbage, but the weekly levels are actually pretty fun. It has a really satisfying reward mechanism and I've never felt the desire to spend money (because everything is laughably overpriced).

You ever play Gem TD on Warcraft frozen throne?

Jump in the discussion.

No actually, my introduction to TDs was Bloons TD3. I've played a fair amount of TDs from the 2010s though, such as Defense Grid 2, Creeper World 3, and Bubble Tanks TD II.

Glad youre enjoying it

The league looks bad imo

But what can I say, my PC killed itself so no league for me :marseydoomer:

League mechanic is not too interesting but it's great for crafting.

Monsters for it are beyond cracked in classic GGG style. But there's so much base content in the game a boring league mechanic doesn't bother me much.

What’s ur starter build? I started an impending doom build but I’m not loving it. Somehow I always go back to seismic trap.

Yeah I was thinking of running doom but heard it was janky and having playing dark Pact skeles one league I swore never again.

Currently running frost blades trickster and it feels nice. Abuses some of the new nodes to level and I find crucible mods on claws are really good for it while leveling.

Specifically following this guy's guide which is very good and detailed:

ive been working on 100%ing mario 3d world. just like a world per weekend. minus world-crown, its pretty easy and chill fun, but man is it tedious as FRICK

to 100% 3d world you need to:

  • clear main story

  • get every star

  • get every stamp

  • reach the top of every flagpole

  • beat every level with every character

ive done the first four steps, and at this point am just playing for an hour each weekend to clear the worlds with every character. time consuming as frick, but ill be very satisfied once im done with this surprisingly fun baby game.

The first one? Absolutely. It has an amazing atmosphere and gameplay loop that is really well designed. The dlc is also great.

The sequel? No. It's complete shit and one of the worst sequels I've ever seen. They completely changed the core loop and now it's a really shitty rouge-lite.

Well there was the No Man’s Sky update on Wednesday, so I’ve been doing nothing but that. But now it’s a holiday weekend so I am away :grr:

I have spent a disgusting amount of time traveling between the new D̷͇͚͎̒Ī̵͇͓̇S̴̙͕̦̀S̷̘̋Ơ̷͕͚͑̾N̸͓̜̋̀̚A̴̽͆̐͜N̴̈́ͅT̴̨̙͑ͅ systems hunting for the perfect Interceptor. All-black possibilities of ships are new and they’re extremely exciting. I have found three so far.

https://i.rdrama.net/images/16809778401179204.webp

Not at all the best background for evil-looking ships but darn do they look great. Supercharged slot placement is mid at best but I’ve set up portals on the planets I found them so I can return in the future if I’m ever bored out of my mind and want to spam Dreadnought AI Beacons to try to find square or T-placement. Interceptor variety is amazing though.

Corrupted planets and the new sentinels are a joy as well, though my eyes now see things in a permanent shade of purple from spending so much time on them. And finally being able to blow up sentinel freighters is wonderful.

Is the update part of a new expedition or just a general update to the game?

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

Content update! There actually isn’t a new expedition yet. It’s a MEATY update. New jetpack which is minor, but a new class of ship (interceptor) with a fuuuuuckload of procgen models and colors, new corrupted planets with rad mechanics (bunch of new corrupted sentinel types, new resources, new POI, crashed interceptors, antigravity storms), the sentinel freighters can now be blown up and it’s AWESOME, two new types of extremely powerful multitool, massive new lore dealing with Abyss/Void Mother/Atlantid (the sentient remnant of Korvax Prime) and the 17th minute), etc.

Carp, please pin this weekly thread :marseybegging: ^_^ (<- me when you pin it)

Finish Ori and the Blind Forest this week. I have a lot of thoughts about it but won't go into detail because I'm both too old and too busy to be talking about children's video games. So, in a nutshell: On the surface, everything about this game seems great, as it ticks all the boxes of a good video game, e.g. it's visually impressive, has a great soundtrack, its plot is gut-wrenching yadda yadda yadda I'm already tired talking about this game because the following elements are terrible: (I) the combat is very unsatisfying and barebones, (ii) exploration being hidden behind new mechanics is fun but not every 'level' needs five of them, (iii) for a game that is praised as a masterpiece, the zones shouldn't be barely connected stages but should rather be intertwined to create an immersive world, (iv) some of the levels (especially the escape sequences) are visually unintelligible, as you sometimes can't tell whether things are in the foreground or background, you don't know whether thorns will kill you in one move or not or the fact that all enemy attacks blend in perfectly with the visuals so you cannot even see them at all; although the worst of all the mistakes they did designing the levels is the god awful approach in which you sometimes cannot even see the screen you want to go to or rather what obstacles lie there. So you're basically encouraged to jump, die to see what this part of the stage looks like, and then try again. This trial-and-error motif is a recurring one throughout the game, and frankly, it is very annoying. Games of this genre are supposed to be intuitive and easy to pick up and understand, but for what it's worth, I'm already spending 2 minutes more than I needed to, and once I found out that you don't just have 3 energy thingies and 3 life thingies, the game got a LOT easier than it was before, but that's on me.

Anyways, I've started playing Super Meat Boy and Celeste again because both these games are much better than Ori (even though they barely fit into the same genre).

Like @loli_esports said, ori 2 improves on lielterally everything you mentioned (a lot on combat and a quite a bit on exploration too since the game lets you bend the rules if you go for extra jumps/dashes early). That said, saying celeste and meat boy are better than ori 1 is my candidate for :marseybrainlet: take of the week.

Battletech Advanced 3062, though if you’re not familiar with the game, I recommend Battletech Extended: Commander’s Edition. BTA is fully combined arms at this point, while BEX is still mech only, but BEX is a great starting point for learning the game while BTA is throwing you in the deep end with new, more complicated systems, and assuming you already understand everything

Think I'm on the last few chapters of RE4R. I never played the original, but this is pretty good. Ik people have been praising it as one of the GOATs, but honestly I think RE2R is better, but both are still fantastic

Village had better villains (not just the Big Woman :marseynut:) and better interiors, but 4 is a lot more chaotic and kinetic.
