just to add to this: if any of you old heads wants to return to one of these games with a bit of a new spin check out these romhacks https://cdromance.com/romhacks/?search=castlevania , the stuff that ends up on this site is generally the cream of the crop of romhacks, stuff that people bother to pre patch and upload.
It varies from hack to hack, im just gonna paste the description of one of the more substantial overhauls
>Castlevania Rondo of Ruin is a Castlevania Portrait of Ruin romhack aiming to modify most of the games content. There is a new story, new items, sprites, weapons, music, and most of the games areas are modified in both small and big ways. Set 5 years after the events of Symphony of the Night, join Richter Belmont, Maria Renard and their companions as they work to unravel what has caused Castlevania's early return to the world of humans.
there are a few like this that remix prettymuch everything in the game
I am aware you gentlemen are very busy, and I apologize for the double-ping, but we have a most interesting case that commonly afflicts our community.
I've heard its a pretty good game actually, just not worth $60. i don't care about the integrity of the franchise
What we are witnessing is a severe case of cope. Notice how quickly the defense mechanism kicks in when "creative bankruptcy" is brought up. Oh, he wouldn't pay $60 but $50? Of course he would.
i don't care about the integrity of the franchise
No one mentioned the integrity of a "franchise" that began in the late 90s and has been trundled through 100 companies since then. It's the same shit year after year. Nevertheless, he doubled down on the defensive because he would surely pay not $60 for the same game made a year so ago. He would pay $50. And he wants to let everyone know that he's not crazy. He isn't demanding the same slop year after year. He isn't the cause of why !g*mers keep getting shit games every year.

Na i've heard it's good, I'm just skittish about playing old games tbh. Mostly because pixel shit just doesn't look good on modern tvs, same goes with a lot of "indie" games
I probably last played it on a PSP or DS and it's quite perfect for a portable gaming system. I did play it on the TV when it first came out and it was really fancy back then lol

Iconoclasts is a little short but is a huge standout in the last 10 years or so imo.
Cave Story is exceptional. Free version is good but the Cave Story + on steam is worth it imo and probably goes on sale often.
La Mulana is really good but is extremely difficult.
Tevi is really good but I saw you are anime avoidant. Same goes for Lunar Nights and Record of Lodoss War, though they may be a bit easier to stomach with their pixel art. I've heard great things about Rabi-Ribi but the art style is too much for me to stomach.
Bloodstained is insultingly easy. I was very disappointed in it.
Valdis Story is more anime shit but doesn't really make up for it if you dislike the art style.
Beyond that you can always emulate the older Castlevania games. Most of them are good.

I liked it well enough but the sequel is new and expensive, and it wasn't my favorite either. Dead Cells is fun, but that's not exactly the type of game I mean although it is similar
Bloodstained was alright, I'd recommend Valfaris too (that's more of an action platform game), but I haven't had any time to spend with games for the past few months
Didn't actually get that far but it reeked of "give this a second chance". Art was amazing and there was tons of shit thrown at you off the bat.
Super Paper Mario is quite linear but open world and platform rpg so sorta counts. It's a great game.
Shantae and Shantae: Risky's Revenge. Very funny and very naughty.
Also, you should play that awesome metroidvania idea I had in my head as a teenager. It was like cave story and abuse on dos and super paper mario mixed together.
Does Guacamelee count? That one is really good. It was a lot of people's first indie "Metroidvania" I think, or one of them, so it's good for newcomers to the genre. Axiom Verge and Bloodstained Curse of the Moon aren't bad options if you're looking for something with a more retro style and feel. Bloodstained Ritual of the Night (totally separate from Curse of the Moon) is good if you're into mega weeb shit but I wouldn't spend $40 on it. Also The Vagrant is an okay cheap anime game with Vanillaware stylings.
Bloodstained is excellent but you should play a Castlevania game first to really appreciate it. Symphony of the Night is probably the most well-regarded overall, but I really like Aria of Sorrow. Pick one of those, beat it, then do Bloodstained.

I played 20-30 mimutes of the new Prince of Persia. I've never played any other Prince or Persia games but it was so dull and generic and not challenging. And maybe the layout gets more complex as the game goes along but it wasn't really Metrovania style from what I saw.
Just my 2 cents on a game you already said you weren't going to buy.

That seems like a pretty short amount of time to give a judgement, but noted because you seem to know what you're talking about and I like you. it is a metroidvania style game afaik though. I'm not paying $60 for it either way. I just want a fun shortish game to play for a couple weeks
I probably found it boring and quit really early bc that isn't the type of game I usually play. I only like some of the Castlevania games because they have a lot of personality.
Rabi Ribi is one of the best mechanically with a high amount of replay value, but its artstyle is very anime and its story is pretty much filler. Still worth playing for the gameplay alone imo.
