Football Manager devs basically just update the database and add some minimal patch to the previous version and then charge €50, and then people complain that they're paying full price for a patch but then pay it anyway because it's the only real game out there of its genre.
There's surely money to be made so why doesn't anyone else want to develop a football management game?

There was a new one I saw on steam the other day called "we are football" but it seems to have fairly middling reviews.
The market for football management games is probably still fairly niche and FM have such an inbuilt advantage with their network and brand awareness that most companies have probably decided it's not worth the effort to try and take them on.
During the 2000s there were are fair few but FM just pushed them all out in the end.

I suppose there's also the explanation that it's actually not that simple to make a football management game that you can't just find the glitch that wins every match. Even Football Manager has that problem with gegenpressing to victory
