Is the OLED Steam Deck worth it?

Thinking of picking one up. I'd use it to play comfy non-AAA games in bed for snuggle time :marseyneet:

I've been playing on my laptop but the ergonomics suck and its a pain in the butt :marseypain:

I also travel a fair bit and it would be great to soy out in business class :marseysoyswitch:

All the internet reviews seem kinda astroturfed so I'll ask the most reliable people I can think of: The socially inept r-slurs of rdrama :dramatardlove::dramatardlove::dramatardlove:

maybe for long business trips you could buy a 8 inch black dildo instead. longer battery life, smaller form factor, and much better for the environment! :soyjakyell:

1. Do you already own a steam deck? If yes, then: no, that would be r-slurred. If no, then proceed to question 2.

2. Are you poor? If yes, then: no, that would be r-slurred. If no, then proceed to question 3.

3. Do you accept that you will use this item almost exclusively to emulate games from your childhood, that are now free to download on the internet, and only occasionally play recent releases? If yes, then: obviously you should buy the highest spec version available to maximize the emulation power you can get out of it.

I got mine a year or so ago (before the OLED version), and it's pretty comfy for what I expect it to do.

To confirm: I should be able to install dolphin and project64 on this bad boy?

If you need a ROM site I reccomend Vimms Lair:

https://vimm.net/

Very reliable, but it does have a โ€œcooldownโ€ between downloads.

Out of the box, the highest-spec version that existed before the one you're thinking of buying can emulate every 1player game released on any console up thru the end of the PS2 era via emu deck. A couple, like Gran Turismo 3// or Shadow of the Colossus just need about 5 min of messing with basic settings to also work flawlessly.

With more effort, some folks have gotten most of MGS4 to run at 30-40fps on that same hardware.

And aside from emulating, mine runs, for example: RDR2, the Resident Evil 2 remake, and MGSV without breaking a sweat. I mostly use it to replay LucasArts point & click games from the early 90s tho :marseyshrug:

Also, know going in that there's no support for Easy Anti-Cheat, so you can't play most pvp multiplayer games, even though the hardware can run them.

I love mine.

Have had no issues or complaints; battery life is fine if you're playing anything that isn't resource heavy.

Reviews are generally accurate. Only really downsides are the battery life is still meh and Linux can be fiddly. I basically only use my full gaming PC to play Fortnite.

Surely the battery life heavily depends on the game being run? I'm probably going to run low-tier games with this so I'd like to imagine I can get 3 hours worth at least running Balatro or FTL right?

If the goal is to tryhard I'm going to mouse + keyboard at the rig anyway.

Yeah you should get 3hrs+ plus with those games. I get around 1.5hrs paying Red Dead 2.

Probably can keep it charged on a plane/train these days anyways, with USB/outlets being much more prominent

No. Get the screens out of the bedroom. Do something else on a business trip. Treat gametime as hot with a dedicated desktop system as it always was in the good old days.

:marseybruh2: I'm talking about the plane ride. You'd be insane to think I'm doing anything other than exploring and getting trashed when I arrive at the destination.

If you're ok not playing the latest AAA slop on it, it's great. I have the LCD model and love it. The touchpads are great for CRPG's. I have a GPD Win Mini as well that I've been using more lately because it's easier to take with me, but the Deck is more comfortable and is more versatile for games that don't use a conventional controller layout.

Why not just do the steam link to your phone thing

I used to do this then got a deck and the deck is way better.

Streaming from your PC to your phone with a controller is something that sounds good on paper but in practice it's always a hassle due to things like having to turn the PC on first (could never get Wake-on-LAN working with it), connecting the controller to the phone, having lag spikes every now and again due to wifi interference, etc.

Meanwhile the deck is as simple as turning it on and clicking play.

Also he wants it for a plane ride so streaming is out of the question anyway.

I would 100% buy it if I had a use case for it. It's pretty incredible value + you can pirate all you want on it unlike a console. However, I can't really imagine a scenario where I'm using it more than once a week.
