70 percent of devs unsure of live-service games sustainability

https://www.gamedeveloper.com/business/70-percent-of-devs-wary-of-live-service-games-being-sustainable

Most indie games that succeed, succeeded when they were the sole good free 2 play game that run on every system. Like a kid didn't had beast pc and money to buy pubg but there was alternative Fortnite. Now why would he switch to another battle royal game if there is Fortnite that all his classmate playing ? Now a legit success live service game is gayshin impact it's a Zelda wannabe that is free and on non Nintendo console then their next game is live service Jrpg (honkai stars railway) but most game dev hope to just copy someone else game and get rich.

Cliff Blazinsky was the most hilarious one, tried copy overwatch failed and instantly started trying to copy pubg/Fortnite :marseyxd:

If we're being brutally honest live service just isn't sustainable in the long term. Every game dies eventually and forcing devs to keep adding features reduces quality.

What you see with the older live service games is excessive bloat added over time. Apex Legends has silly numbers of characters that rely on gimmick features. PUBG has something like 5 in-game currencies that nobody cares about. Even Minecraft replaced meaningful updates with bloated crap that nobody asked for.

One notable exception might be counter-strike, though they've avoided bloat by just using gambling via skins to keep income flowing.

most Apex characters just get ignored anyway so it doesnt matter. if someone picks Crypto for instance it just tells you that guy sucks and will be an easy kill. same with Lifeline, but you have to watch out with her because she's always picked by girls who suck at the game playing with their much higher skilled e-boyfriend so you have to watch out for that. and enemy Wattsons are literally always god tier for some reason, she has like a 0.5% pick rate but everyone who picks her is sweaty af.

Lifeline got nerfed into the ground, I take it?

I played Wattson a lot before it became a meta pick. The fences were shit but the ultimate was ridiculously good in the end game.

Darn. Tencent Timmy continues to be a huge boon to the industry. :motherofgod:

Now he's killing shitty live services by taking the throne as the one true live service :derpeuphoria:
