Spore is more controversial than unpopular.

I have played it with my friends long ago, and we all had fun until space age when most of them got bored.

The unpopular and arguably (or more like factually) bad game I enjoy is Humankind. I won't ever argue that it's not fundamentally broken mess with limited viable options. Even the subreddit is mostly buck broken when it comes to that. This is the top post this year:

I like playing it though. :marseyshrug:

Too bad EA ditched the entire franchise.

It's a progressive game. There is a women emancipation event, where if you decline you get a purely negative modifier and if you agree you get a positive one. We all know that's scientifically not how it goes.

It really hurts that humankind was so dogshit. If you're gonna ape civ so obviously at least have the decency to do it right. Fricking embarassing.

Oh wow you like that little-known hidden gem ... Dark Souls 2? Me too!

For me, I'd have to answer Zelda Tears of the Kingdom.

Edit: now I've had to reflect I'm going to give a real answer: G-Police.

Specifically the PC version with a semi decent flight stick.

I sunk fricking days into that as a kid and remember being blown away by the graphics and the futuristic space cities.

I spent about 10 hours trying to get it working on Windows 10 and succeeded, only to find it wasn't compatible with modern flight sticks and was impossible to play otherwise.

So I spent another 20 hours using a combination of vJoy and Universal Control Remapper to try to emulated old game port flight sticks which worked. In Windows. Just not in G-Police.

Spent another 20 hours in a mood, until I had the bright idea of changing the USB port and suddenly it fricking worked it really did!

Turns out though the game is pretty garbage now so I did 2 levels and got bored.

Star Wars Battlefront 2 is rightfully hated for the scummy loot box stuff it launched with, which is too bad because all that stuff got fixed within 2 weeks of launch and that game was GREAT. Probably the last great large-scale FPS game made before the genre was destroyed with aggressive skill-based matchmaking and MMR.

its 32vs32. most of your personal efforts are already rounded out by the masses that make up your team. mmr would just make it worse.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

Bro, if it's all completely random skill levels, then personal efforts aren't :marseyairquotes: rounded out :marseyairquotes:, that's the whole fricking point, people want to get massive killstreaks and hard-carry a team full of casual players while not having meaningful opposition on the opposing team :marseyeyeroll:

If everyone was within a standard deviation or two of each other :marseynerd2: THEN that would make complete sense, because everyone's skill averages out and you can have a competitive match :marseyhmmhips:

The only people that play fighting games are straggy chinks so I don't care what they think.

The fun of FPS games used to be get stomped --> get better--> stomp others in pubs. Now we gotta make everything inclusive to all skill levels so you gotta play sweaty at all times if you're any good. Wouldn't want to hurt anybody's feelings if they're no good.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

Says the one who's feelings are hurt that he's not any good :marseyrofl: The only people I ever hear complain about matchmaking are people who are absolutely terrible, like Zesty Jesus who made a career out of being shitty at a game and getting meatriders like you to justify that it's matchmaking fault and not his for walking out in front of sightlines with the worst movement possible.

Spinning the concept of playing against opponents of equal-ish skill, just like you do in virtually any game worth giving an iota of a frick about, to be some form of "inclusivity" thing is fricking wild :marseyflushzoom:

@kamala_is_bae why don't you want to play close :marseynoyouzoom: matches where :marseydrama: you are able to influence the outcome of your games?

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

It's not a "majority" opinion, if it was they wouldn't have widely implemented those systems. It's a bunch of newbz that never really got gud who complain on reddit and 'chan about getting stomped and blaming the matchmaking system.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

If you're playing team death match, 9 out of 10 games you're ending with a really close score. Usually within two or three kills. It doesn't sound that bad on paper but it really sucks the fun out of the game when you are sweating in every match in every playlist. I noticed it most in COD and Halo Infinite, but it seems to be in every PvP game now.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

MMR is good EXCEPT in deckbuilders where it amounts to "if you won twice in a row the system will scour the internet for someone with a hard counter to your deck" and ends up making the game really samey. Every red deck in mtg arena ends up against other red decks, etc.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

did you see the nerds on mtga subreddit figured out the balance wheightings for each card in brawl? i dgaf enough to do it but if you want to its possible to make a noob stomper deck now.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

afaik I thought it didn't care about your deck at all and purely about your winrate, which is why you get weird shit like if you make a new account then no matter what deck you're using you immediately get 50 free ranked wins and end up at mythic rank. someone did a video where they used a starter deck on a new account and literally only played the card on the left of their hand and they got to mythic

It had fricking absolutely tons of content iirc, at one point I was like ‘ah I finally completed it' but then it just kept going

Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance was great too, playing couch co-op with my mate from down the road, hopping about stupidly as a dwarf and a human and bashing goblins, loved it

The Geneforge series kept me well entertained at one point, I really enjoyed them, and they set me up to enjoy the first two Fallout games when I later discovered them

wow summoner, thats a name i havent seen in years. summoner 1 was really close to ps2's release, might have been a launch title. game was kinda jank IIRC but summoner 2 expanded on it a bunch and had some sort of trippy time travel twist at the end, i remember being freaked out by it as a kid. neat games, definitely of their time, but neat nonetheless

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

Yeah, I watched a video review earlier and it went hard on the jank aspect, which was definitely present. But some of those cities are very memorable, I liked exploring them, they felt quite alive (at the time) and had nice designs.

I wouldn't play the first one again. I don't have the patience or time now, and I'd rather leave those memories nice and cozy

A like this game from like 20 years ago called Halo, Combats Evolution. No one really liked that game at all when it came out but I'm still a big fan. It's a First Player Shooter and the enemies are kinda smart for the time but you can only hold 2 weapons ( I think the processors back then couldn't handle more). The master chef is pretty cool even though his green suit looks goofy. I also liked it's much more popular and widely acclaimed successor Shogo: Mobile Arms Division on PC-CDROM.
