Back in high school I had to write a report on symbolism in this book. The opening described a football field with the goal posts casting shadows like a cross. We went over and over about this religious symbolism. The teacher later found an interview of the author that she played for us and he said "Religious symbolism? No I meant the shadows literally looked like crosses"
