One thing I like about FF7 is that Cloud really tries to be an edgelord but the game simply doesn't let him. He can't brood effectively with all the minigames and nip humor tropes he's forced through

It's great, he's literally stealing the identity of a different, cooler guy, is somehow capable of fighting at the same level so people don't question it too much, and is constantly forced into situations that break up his tough guy routine, like crossdressing. When it hit me that Cloud did actually have a personality and that all of his silent protagonist moments were intentional and in-character I realized that this was a truly well-written game.

To be fair he's not meant to be as good at fighting as Zack was, at least not til much later in the game when he's travelled and levelled up a lot. The remake makes it more clear but people tend to laugh at him when he says he's first-class because it's obvious that he's not to anyone who's seen a real one in action
