The first Shenmue was ahead of its time, I can't think of another game that has such a strong sense of place, like that game could not have taken place anywhere but suburban Japan in the 80s.
The second game lost that, devs clearly designed the setting based on kung fu movies, Hong Kong feels much less real than Yokosuka.
