Some people are frustrated that such a small simple game (solo dev) is nominated instead of a more traditional 3rd person story driven game. Just check out the past winners, basically all in the same genre (Action-adventure) except for Overwatch (Waifu sim).
My opinion? I think it is a good thing that Balatro was nominated and I hope more like it get nominated. Though Wukong should probably win this year if it's as good as people say.

Look. I get it. Balatro is a good game. I own it, and have beat it.
But I'm not OMFG HECKIN' ADDICTED 24/7 MAKING HANDS ALL DAY ERRY DAY
It's a solid A out of 5, but I fail to see how it won GOTY. Nevertheless, goyslop lost and I'm ok with that.
