Playing strategy games in VR seems like a bad idea.

Unless the VR is just the headset and you use the keyboard and mouse, then it's still a bad idea, but maybe not as bad.

You don't want to point and click for 10 hours while wearing a rapidly heating $1000+ rig on your head?

Skill issue

Simulate a normal computer screen playing Civ 7, but the surrounding environment is your palace and naked harem.

It's turn based, not real time so shouldn't be too stressful

I quite like the idea of peering down like a god onto the game tbh

That is really cool, and appealing to me as well.

But, I'm not sold on this being anything but janky to play.

Why? VR touch controls are more precise and intuitive than a mouse and honestly I don't find myself using many keyboard shortcuts in civ 6, although admittedly the base ui isn't great and I use mods to make it better.

Are they with menus though? Of course picking something up etc is fine, but in Civ you are clicking on lists, selecting tiles for units to move on, and those things are usually not that big. And if you make them big, you have to scroll every time.

The biggest hurdle here being able to select specific hexes. And I don't know if there is an optimal size between constant map scrolling with huge tiles, and aiming into microscopic hexes with your hands.

I can't imagine it not being an awkward or time wasting experience.

idk if @tempest is just being a contrarian again but having to menu in VR sucks butt. Every game either avoids it as much as possible or you use kb/m. No one is going to be pointing and clicking in a game like Civ where it's purely navigating UI for hours

These are my actual opinions :marseywholesome:

IMO the issue here is less "menus" and more that text rendered in VR sucks to read. Plus VR tends to offer more intuitive ways of interaction which just aren't possible or feasible with a "pancake" interface.

Anyways I definitely think you could design a coherent VR UI for civ 6. No idea about 7 because I haven't played it but I'll probably try it in VR at some point.

Edit: I have never used a kb/m with VR. That sounds fricking terrible.

Pointless scrolling is mentioned in the reviews, it sounds like they basically fricked up the PC interface as much as they needed to to make this happen

They are imo. I haven't played 7 and probably won't for years but you could definitely do this with 6, there's not really that many things a city would build. You'd point at what you want to build and then press the trigger. Scrolling is easily done with the thumb stick.

Maybe you're thinking of trying to play it without controllers, ie with just finger tracking? That would be difficult I guess.

voice commands can/should be added to vr.

VR fitness games are great and I could see triangle strategy (square ENIX turn base game) work since whole map is on screen but civilization is just not the game

Who tf is sitting down and playing a 10 hour civ game in one sitting? Do you really have nothing better to do with your life?

Woke up yesterday at 6 am, went walking with the dogs, then to the gym, then cooked some food, then went to class, came home at 16:00 played until 04:00

The novelty of this will wear off far before you even finish a game. Like it's cool they're providing it as an option where you can virtually stand around a map and move shit around like a board game, but holy frick that sounds tedious to play a 10+ hour game on

I think Snappy has a developmental disability. We both have pride though in our condition so don't call him a r-slur because you shouldn't call r-slurred people the r-slur unless they're acting like r-slurred people.
