You gotta start building up you visual library! I often collect references of outfits and designs that inspire me, for example, I really like victorian and gothic lolita type of outfits so I have a bunch of pics saved from Pinterest and other places with designs in that style. The more you're exposed to references the more your mind starts taking notes of interesting details and combinations that you'll be able to remember and mix and match when designing characters, outfits or anything
