dude what? This is a very clear revenue stream for them, why on earth would they just cut it off without replacement?

There
are only two ways this makes sense; either theyβre about to release a more aggressive monetization or theyβre extremely r-slurred. Iβm fairly
certain itβs the latter.

Obviously the " about to release a more aggressive monetization " part.
They repeatedly referenced "Rewarding content and contribution"
What I dont get is this bit "Weβll share more in the coming months as to what this new future looks like."
Why take months to release it?

100% they are going for monetization. See how he kept saying 'contribution'? that's where jackoffs pay money so people can get actual IRL money for content they generate on reddit.
It will be a shit show.
They will be sued for it, hopefully out of existence.

like you don't even have to be any sort of competent to understand that if you remove the money-making feature you stop making money from it. i'm boggled.

Im sure before they made this decision, they looked at the vast hoard of wealth they were amassing every month with it and said, "you know what, that's good enough" before turning off the spigot.

they are probably planning a way for direct monetization like Youtube superchat and Twitters (not yet released) paid-subscriber + ad-rev share model. That will be way more profitable than awards for both powerusers and Reddit.

Considering how inorganic the upmarsey system is, this would be abused to a ridiculous degree. You already have repost bots that take the top comment from the same repost. Since reddit allows people to repost and just post something from somewhere else, it hardly incentivizes anyone to actually contribute quality, original posts. Either way, I feel like reddit would have to get rid of communities and just let anyone post anything to potentially get it on the front page for this to work. and I am sure the conversion rate would be 1000 upmarseys = .0001

You are a weirdo if you pay for reddit (or some other site). Therefore it probably wasn't a big revenue stream compared with mobile ads.

Oh there'll be a more predatory replacement coming, it's just bad enough that they won't announce it ahead of time. Probably lootboxes.
That or there's another massive libertarian network exploiting awards and so they have to kill it.

They want the current system dead and gone before they transition to NFTs. They're would be another blackout if it was a direct swap.
