For a mere $10 million I can easily rewrite this into an app that has a cool Electron frontend and a backend that uses machine learning to analyze potential passengers' life histories and prevents chuds from boarding.

The trains in Germany are fricking awful. Not only are they cancelled/delayed more than the UK, the services around helping you when this happens are basically non-existent. They just cancel long haul trains with no notice and then tell you to go frick yourself basically (delay repay rules are shockingly bad too compared to what you get in the UK). Or when they do add replacement services when the trains aren't working, they are also mostly dogshit.

When I lived in Southern Germany, the main problem I faced with public transport was trains actually leaving early. But no matter, the next train was only a few minutes behind.

When the trains weren't running, the police showed up and taxied everyone to where they were going for free.

There also weren't any rat kings or junkies chasing girls down the street and throwing shit at people like there are in Berlin.

The trains aren't late because of this and your punctuality is only kinda right.

If you have an aging infrastructure that is run at 130% of its capacity, then it's easy to be late. One late train, one small failure and your trains are going to be late. There are so many trains driving that there isn't any capacity for errors left and too few rails to drive detours.

The punctuality percentage is bad and needs to improce. It is just the punctuality of the IC(E)s. The regional trains had a punctuality of 95%.

Germany has a big network with many regional trains. Countries like France have a pretty good High Speed Network, but a horrible regional one. France has an average infrastructure age of 28, while Germany is at 17.

Germany has to improve and invest, but the rail network is much better than often described.

You can invent new operating systems or whatever but you can't invent reliable non-r-slurred programmers like we had in the 1990s.

Kraut bureaucracy moment

Imagine running on a functional system, how will the trains get anywhere if it doesn't have the latest Windows with an integrated Cortana spending 10GB of ram just to remain idle?

Yeah, it is kind of funny. But as a codecel it also makes sense.

The programs that require it are probably more robust than anything you'd shit out today and require less resources. Not to mention the whole certification process.
