I write software for money and, while I've read some horror stories about this kind of shit going on in tech, I've never actually seen it at any of the places I've worked (to be fair, the horror stories seem to mostly come from FAANG-scale companies and I've never worked for one). Most of my coworkers have either been apathetic about politics, or seemed to have pretty moderate views, or if they were wokes they just didn't sperg out about their wokeshit. Of course I still try to be careful about discussing any really touchy subjects, but it still seems a lot better than this academia shit. Although I wouldn't know, I have zero experience in academia from any point after I got my BA in smoking weed and writing papers the night before they were due (I did humanities in college, didn't get into tech shit until a few years later).

It was an understandable reaction to how politics and perspective was parceled alongside identity historically but is making less and less sense as time goes on. It reifies identity while the rest of society is doing the opposite with the internet doing the most heavy lifting.
The reaction is increasingly paranoid policing of identity, since the Internet gives access to everything there's a paranoid urge to prevent that culture knowledge from being abused and to contextualize it to keep it within the lines. All that ends up doing is stigmatizing those with unique experiences contrary to the norm which the Internet also facilitates(see here). They were afraid that the decontexualized misunderstood or weaponized minority culture would be institutionalized by the majority to the detriment of the minority. While they can gatekeep these formal unanonymized positions, they can't for the rest of society regardless of how hard they try but the paralyzing fear remains.
When so much of human interaction is psuedo anonymous where a yt can self teach Navajo and Navajo culture, then pass themselves psuedo anonymously online as Navajo, then be accepted as Navajo by Navajo then you get pretendian hunters which collat actual Navajo.
Majority identities were deconstructed while minority identities were reified with 20th century information technology. As what it means to be a man became more unclear the idea of what it means to be a trans man became more real and concrete. Now everything is being deconstructed in an extreme way that no amount of word games can stop thanks to 21th century information technology. Western academics still can't get over there elitism so they have to make increasingly desperate attempts to police narratives with the only tool left, identity. Affirmative action in college has been such a failure for so many years. The black/white achievement gap hasn't decreased but has steadily increased over time, white and Asian kids with brilliant minds still get rejected, and the black kids with the subpar SAT scores who do get accepted in over them are destined to fail because they We have been going more and more like India, China and Japan's with academia trying to find βuniquenessβ in the sameness of a million students applying to overrated snobby liberal universities. College admissions is such a joke and this applies also to the academia hiring process.
It's all done to justify some grifter's job in the university though. Looks to be more and more reminiscent of the Jewish quotas in the thirties that barred some great minds such as Feynman from the Ivy Leagues for being Jewish.

Affirmative action shifted to being about diversifying campuses which had a hilarious effect of prioritizing the children of black immigrants over African Americans, despite black immigrants being richer than yt Americans while fricking over Chinese Americans whose families built the railroads and were forced into ghettos by the US government.

The few children of black immigrants who aren't richer than huwite Americans seem to be Somalis, who have moved to the inner-city ghettoes and have assimilated into the classic hood mentality, complete with dine n'dashing, gangbanging, speaking stereotypically ghetto, and being unemployed.
