White progressives don't do it for status among blacks. Blacks only make up 13% of the population and are likely not even in the same area as your average white progressive (because they are poorer and less educated). They do it for status among other whites and Asians(white-adjacent) that make up their middle and upper class fellows at corporations or academia.

APD is a particularly funny example because they somehow simultaneously both did and didn't "defund the police." It was some of the most Austin shit I've ever seen.
They tried to walk this line where they'd say all the right things to the younger progressives, then actually do the things the older NIMBYs wanted. What that meant was city officials were publicly saying "our cops are racist and evil," then turning around to the cops and privately going "dude we need you at full force ASAP." Of course, that meant no cops wanted to work here - they were being asked to take the hate and also work harder for less money.
It got to the point that there were like 350 officer vacancies and the remaining cops were basically quiet quitting. Shockingly, city council has now (very very quietly) approved a 5-year $220m police contract.
