At least some house reps room together. Idk how common it is, but I've read several profiles of congressmen who lived in the equivalent of a 23 year old's bachelor pad but for junior congressmen.
It know it's quite common at the state level in California. Sacramento is expensive-ish and pretty remote so a lot of officials and staffers end up subleasing from each other.

Isn't the travel reimbursement mainly for travel between their district and D.C., which they only have to do because of the job?
The health insurance and pension is nice for them, but I'd trade a higher salary for getting rid of the insider trading/board positions.
