I'm not gonna defend this crap (no, I didn't watch it either) but the whole "these were made with the same budget" thing doesn't really work when you're comparing it to movies made when you could buy a whole bag of groceries for $3.50

That and working within the industry amongst seasoned professionals is different compared to this indie. The talent Lynch had access to while making Eraserhead is different from this flick. This isn't to say that I think someone like Drinker could've made a film of that caliber with access to better talent.
