Margins will be devastated by cost of security apparatus. Mines are hundreds of kms in the middle of nowhere how easy do you think running them will be in a scenario where the entire population sees you as colonizers. Every truck will have to be in a convoy, staff will have to be guarded 24/7 and there will still be casualties. Mining is as it is fairly low margin affair even in ideal conditions. Lots of mines go under when prices slump. Kind of like oil.
Its just not realistic in current year. And besides, western fear mongering aside, Chinx actually do have socialist moralism. It won't fly with their own pop. Why do you think BRI is mostly contained to states with terrible credit scores lol? China thought it'd score a point by investing in markets other financiers refused to serve but this was done by politicians running roughshod over actual concerns over repayment. Most Chinese loans come at higher interest rates than equivalents from WDB/ADB, only reason to take one is you can't get them from those agencies.
They have been taking constant Ls on those investments for a while now. You know who else is a major investor in a lot of these countries? Japan. How much international influence does Japan have lol?
Now ultimately even $100B isn't that much for China over a decade. They have to combat US for influence across world now that it has turned somewhat hostile to them and this is a necessary spend for that. But it isn't some ez way to establish global dominion lol.

South Africa is one of the worst of them all because one, South Africa isn't an actual third world country that needs this level of assistance. It's just woefully corrupt (even by thirdie standards). They could pay for this shit themselves if their government stopped stealing.
And two, South Africa joined an economic bloc with China and Russia while the former was performing military drills around Taiwan (US ally) and the latter was invading Ukraine (another US ally). If all these gibs can't even stop you from joining an economic alliance with our two biggest geopolitical rivals who are constantly threatening our allies, then no actual "soft power" is being cultivated and SA is literally just scamming us for free healthcare.

BRICS is an excellent point. Also the fact that China is probably buying more of South Africa's raw material exports, not the US. Even if you were two accept the argument from the second link that PEPFAR is keeping South African workers healthy, the farmer in Idaho isn't securing John Deere's supply lines, but China's. And since Canada is the world's largest aluminum exporter, that's where US importers are buying it from anyway.

Low-income countries are exempt from drug patents and 3rd countries can manufacture them on their behalf. State department pays pharma to add n% capacity to their existing lines in the US and produce drugs for those countries at the same time they produce drugs for those who pay for them.
