This sounds pretty major... can someone explain to a Leaf what the implications of this change are?

The Department of Education hands out federal money to schools and colleges, including student loans. (It doesn't provide any education, itself.) It's long been used as a backdoor way to influence other things, like regulating how schools handle sexual assault or women's sports lest they be denied their funding—originally it had a big influence on desegregation—and that's why conservatives always say they'll abolish it. Schools employ a bunch of extra administrative staff just to handle compliance with those mandates.

What the implications are has always been vague because it doesn't really matter what department is doing those things, it's actual changes to the programs that would make a difference. You'd have to wait to see what plan Trump proposes to Congress and then what Congress actually passes.

The federal DOE was created in 1980. Public education in the US is funded by a mixture of local, state, and federal funds.

Some states have 0% federal funding.

The fed DOE throws tons of money to try to standardize shit and create wacky new ways of approaching education :marseysmoothbrain: and tons of makework infinite paperwork labyrinths so that a school can get fed money for synergy diversity inclusive emotional intelligence learning programs

Test scores across the USA have fallen ever since :marseysquint: at least that's what mildly chuddy teachers tell me :marseyshrug:

Interesting... I was under the impression that there were no more chuddy teachers, in Leaf-land they've been largely driven out at least.

Basically everything to do with K-12 education here is at the local level. Everything. Sometimes small villages defer to the state for things - for example here in IL all teachers across the state are part of the same statewide pension system (EXCEPT in Chicago which is special). But hiring/promotion decisions are entirely local.

I love schoolboard elections because my town has a clique of old ladies running things and there's gigawingcucks like schizomagas and occasional leftys trying to defeat them like :hysterical: "look they are a schoolboard clique that are trying to stay in power and stop change!!! They are promoting (leftoid/rightoid) ideas! VOTE WINGCUCK FOR SCHOOLBOARD THIS YEAR"
