/u/No_Excitement5215, you were fired for being a peepee, not for being late. I've done this too with people. It's way easier to fire you on a technicality than to go through the rigamarole of HR bs. Your former coworkers are probably thrilled you're gone. I feel bad for your preggo gf. Judging by your posts, you're going to split the second she shits that thing out.

Redditors think "At Will" employment means that the evil white male boss can fire you for wearing a green shirt.
What it ACTUALLY
means, is that the evil white male boss can fire you for wearing a green shirt...after they've already documented several other different ways with HR to throw you flat on your butt.

At will employment doesn't need HR.
You can be terminated for any reason at any time. There's no need to justify the termination or give you any advanced notice.
The same goes for the employee, which is why I'll never understand r-slurred wagies that think they need to give two weeks notice.

Yeah.
The function of HR in at will employment states is to head off unemployment claims and Hail Mary wrongful termination suits.

And only after HR has thrown the evil white male boss under the bus because he didn't "give them an opportunity to improve" or "set expectations" or "give them ample training" for the 100th time despite it being documented and in their files. Redditors don't realize how hard it is to fire a person. Redditors are also saying wrongful termination
and HR doesn't protect you but the company
like it's a gotcha. But HR wouldn't sign off on a term unless they were 1000% sure that if they were sued they'd win.

Nah. It can mean that. But if you're fired for wearing a green shirt that's probably going to be a fired without cause unemployment claim. Then unemployment premiums (taxes? whatever you want to call it) go up for the company. If you fire someone for being late that's with cause then there's no valid unemployment claim but it also heads off any potential wrongful dismissal claim.

R-slurred comment. If you are fired for misconduct (being late is misconduct) good luck getting that claim approved. Obviously impossible to make general statements since it's different in every state.
