Nobody sperging about this actually knows or cares about Greek literature or history any more than the RETVRN cute twinks going full SS over Kingdom Come Deliverance actually know or care about the Holy Roman Empire. Their knowledge of it comes from, at most, vaguely remembered lessons in school, a few video games, and what they're reading on the internet from their fellow smoothbrains. All of this shit is an r-slured Kabuki dance demonstrating what side you're on, nothing more.

You can make that argument about anything. People are r-slurs, they don't know anything but Marvel.

You're right that people do this for pretty much everything, but right now they're doing it about something I actually have some :marseygrad: in so I must sperg.

Anyone, on any side, whose line of argument starts with the presumption that "The Greeks" were a completely static, monolithic group of people who for 4,000 years all believed the exact same things, spoke the exact same language, and followed the exact same religious practices might as well automatically have a :marseybrainlet: badge on their profile before taking any of the myriad other issues of discussing this topic into consideration.

All of you are stupid. Not me, though.

:#marseyhesright:

In the Classical Era historians (can you tell I forgot which one?) were already pointing out that the concept of Hellenes didn't exist in Homeric time. Even in their own time there were various kinds of Thracians, Carians, Tyrrhenian, Dolopians (whoever the frick they are), etc. all over Greece who were an important part of their society. I mean heck, it was the Arvanitika who led the movement for Greek independence in the 1800s. And that's just looking at a few snapshots in time of non-Hellenic peoples in Greece. It's complicated enough already just talking about these small minority groups without even getting into the Hellenes.

with the presumption that "The Greeks" were a completely static, monolithic group of people who for 4,000 years all believed the exact same things, spoke the exact same language, and followed the exact same religious practices

You're preaching to the converted, honey. There's an enormous amount of Greek history that normies are just kept away from because it would be too complicated. What's a Phocian or a Molossian? Uhh... :marseycringe: here, read this book where Carl Sagan explains that the Ionians were virtuous scientists.

I warn you though. Some secrets man was not meant to know. Do not ask "what is a Pelasgian?" It has driven men mad.

And then there's the incredibly basic fact, historical considerations aside, that no one actually knows what this movie is. We have no idea how Nolan is going too adapt this story. We have no idea how the character of Athena may be represented. Lupita might be painted gold or be some sort of CG abstraction or maybe her appearance is the point, it means she would stick out as unearthly and different too someone from the Eastern Mediterranean. It's such an neurodivergent kneejerk midbrain spazz out too just immediately assume he would do some sort of completely realistic grounded take on this story when literally nothing about it lends itself too such an interpretation, least of all the entirely A list American/British cast he's picked.

Pelasgians were the actual indigenous inhabitants of Greece. Duh. Would be extremely funny if they get worked into this and are depicted as looking like Lupita.

Frick you btw and long live the CCP.

:marseyagree:

I dunno if they've released any promotional photos yet, but if all I know is Odyssey - Nolan - Lupita, it could be done all kinds of ways. It could be flying around on a spaceship and each stop is a different planet for all I know. That's been done quite a few times already.

If you really want to go for a "realistic" Odyssey, I could tell you how but you're not gonna like it. Proteus isn't a magical shapeshifting being who demands magical "hecatombs" as a supernatural sacrifice. He's the Egyptian governor of what is now Alexandria and he's holding Odysseus' ship hostage until he gets a bribe. Odysseus captures him and holds him hostage until he lets their ships go. Nobody better try me because, with the help of my predecessors I can turn all your fun fantasies into really prosaic boring stories about dealing with bureaucracy and stuff.

:marseyd#oomer:

Pelasgians were the actual indigenous inhabitants of Greece.

Yeah, yeah, that's all the tell the normies. But take a look at Thuc. 4.109.4. Try to explain who the heck he's talking about. Pull on some threads if you really want to get redpilled. If you really think you can handle it.

Duh.

Honey, do not talk down to me. I've been places you've never dreamed of. Caria, Delos, Etruscan pirates in the Strait of Messina, villages on the outskirts of Epidaurus and Troezen. The Sea Peoples. The Pelasgian alphabet that proceeded Greek! There are mysteries out there that will break your brain. If you want to maintain your sanity, just go home and sleep in your nice soft bed where you won't be troubled by this stuff.

:#marseyschizowall:

:#marseyserioushatfact:

I'm not just joking. "Pelasgian" is one of those things where primary sources talk about them constantly but modern historians just kinda don't mention them because there's no way to figure out what it actually means.

He's implying that there was a hybrid culture of Etruscans and Pelasgians that inhabited areas such as Lemnos and pre-Dorian Athens, which would explain the Lemnos script and isn't far fetched given that the Etruscans themselves may have been Pre-IE? What's so redpilling about that.

Oh do please tell. @LesbianBarbie did some coursework on pre-LBAC Greece and found it agonizing at how it seemed like the field was perpetually on the edge of a major breakthrough that never came. @LesbianBarbie almost started weeping when @LesbianBarbie first saw the Pylos Combat Agate. Long live the CCP.

By the Ancient Greeks' own definition (which is quite literally "speaks the language natively") Giannis is a Greek.

Do you mean to tell me that a movie based on a 2,700 year old epic poem about a hero who fricks goddesses and fights monsters, directed by a guy best known for science fiction, might take some liberties with a setting that was already pseudohistorical at best :marseygasp:

Got it, you don't have an argument. You could just be honest and say, "seeing black people makes @LesbianBarbie mad."

If you could show you actually know something about the subject matter, giving a rough estimate (without looking it up) as too when The Odyssey was composed - let's say within 2 centuries - that would be even more impressive.

Who are we kidding, we both know you can't do either of those things. Bye cute twink.
