The "disco was hated and failed because people were anti-gay and anti-minority" has become shitlib orthodoxy over the last 15 or so years. I've even had this debate with some of my boomer friends who got all shitlibby post-goomblegate and me and one dude even stopped talking over this.

I suppose there could have been a conspiracy, but if there was, it kinda failed. The movie made disco bigger than ever; it did die off, sure, but that was a few years later and wasn't really related to Saturday Night Fever at all.
The whole "disco was killed by homophobia and racism" is a fairly common take, though it's obviously a bit dubious; it's similar to saying nu-metal died off due to hatred for white guys in fitted ball caps, or scene bands because of hatred for swoopy hair styles. It's not entirely untrue, but it's kinda mixing up cause and effect.
