It's hard to know. Private wealth is untraceable we know the Waltons are rich because of stock, we know Elon is losing money because stock goes down. We kind of know the Cargill-McMallons are rich because they reveal financials about Cargill but certain their family is much wealthier than we truly know. Now look at a family that's old as frick like the Kennedys, they have a bunch of random land that they just recently developed. That's not going to be on any networth page. We also know the Rockefellers are just as wealthy as during Rockefellers time. But what about families like the Guggenheim they have a investment vehicle that manages $330 billion. So really once you start talking about centi-billionaires it's pointless. You literally cannot spend a 100 billion dollars with modern investment vehicles. Yet imagine that their was a time where the Rothschilds were the richest family on earth by a large margin. They are also getting a lot of property back from large cases and almost every branch owns a bank / investment vehicle. The real answer is most likely a Rothschild heir wouldn't even know how wealthy they are. That's a question with no answer.

I get that their true wealth might be greater than estimated, but (a) I don't think estimates are that wildly off and (b) you're really, really underestimating the effect of dilution on family wealth. Not only dilution but also later generations who grew up rich are likely to spend much more money.

Do you know what centrally planned economies look like? Because they're very different from what we have in the US. For the most part people are allowed to use their money as they see fit, including opening a business. And while yes you still need to pay taxes on profits, that's not the same as central planning where the government tells you where you work, how you work, etc.
The biggest hurdle for many businesses, legally, isn't even federal-level rules but local ones. Local zoning commissions have much more to do with "central planning" than the Fed.
