Confession: I took the SATs in Germany in 11th grade. I didnβt prepare at all, took it cold. I scored a 1380, 690 verbal 690 math. I was so mortified by getting what I regarded as a very low score I have since then always just said it was much lower, just to show I donβt care.

Just to give you an idea on the kind of person he is Jason is the problem with academia
Honestly just go through his twitter he is flipping out on Wesley Yang who is some rightwing guy with a substack. He has multiple threads bitching about this guy I have never heard of.

This is my favorite response about him. The zoomers might not know but SNL used to be funny : .

This guy is around the same age as me, and I don't even remember my SAT score. It got me into the college I wanted to go to, and that was all that mattered. Anyone that cares about their SAT score even one second after matriculation is a fricking loser.

Wesley Yang isn't even a right-winger, he's a pre-2012 liberal. Jason is just losing his mind because Wesley is an uncertified non-academic who can write circles around him.

I got a 1400 (700 English, 700 Math) which was top 1% at the time. (Because back then, the SAT was a lot harder.) But I don't talk about it much nowadays, because an SAT score is literally the stupidest thing to be proud of. I only mention it when I want to dunk on losers who act like academic scores are such a big deal. Real intelligence isn't about grades, it's about your actual knowledge. And the only measurement of knowledge is what you can do with it.

SAT is bullshit, you should flex grad school admissions tests. 750 GMAT score here (top 2% of all grad school applicants), whatβs up?

I canβt remember my GMAT, but I got into all the schools I wanted except fricking Bates College. Got into Columbia, Cornell, Johns Hopkins, LSE, but fricking Bates is the one that snubbed me. Itβs been several years but Iβm still bitter since that rejection was out of nowhere and I wouldβve totally attended if I got the good admissions package I expected.

That's not the flex you think it is. Grad school is for losers who can't make it in the real world yet. The last thing most people want to deal with is some pretentious prick who just spent the last 6-8 years of his/her life cleaning test tubes and making homework for his professor

I scored top 1% on those the first time I took them also. (Don't remember my exact score, just the percentile I was in.) But why are we flexing about GMATs? For all my "impressive" scores on these standardized tests, I really haven't accomplished much in my life beyond driving a lot of people crazy through the magic of science. This is what I mean when I say standardized tests are not a good predictor of intelligence. I really ought to be doing a bit more with my life, to be honest. Driving people insane is fun but I can't help wondering if there might be, like, some sort of bigger picture or end goal I should strive towards.
Although to be fair I am a bit high right now

What a fricking cute twink lol
He obviously did care, that's a shit score even for a second tier Ivy, yet alone Yale
Obviously he Connectionsmaxxxed and now he will narcissismaxxx while clearly being insecure about the fact he's never had to work for anything in his life
People like him feel entitled to do something great because they're born into an environment where you're around other people who do genuinely great things, but has no ability to self reflect and do the needful to make himself one of them
Tl;dr failson

The only people who care about SATs are people who never left academia.
Any Ivy leaguer who got an actual job finds themselves immediately surrounded by people who went to state schools and are just as good as they are. It beats the mentality out of them.

What's so special about software and ivy?
I'm not a burger and don't work in IT
Jump in the discussion.

Software is famously an industry you can make it in with no credentials because it's possible to prove yourself and someone with substantial talent and no credentials is so much better than someone with substantial credentials and no talent that traditional ivy league gatekeeping doesn't work. Ivy league credentials are good for fields where networking is paramount like business and to a degree law. But you have to actually network for that effect. So if you're in business or law working with someone from an ivy background and you don't have one yourself they pretty much squandered the only thing you get out of ivy schools.

I think the SAT thing is probably a symptom of a wider insecurity he has about his lack of stature even within the Ivy tower. Being a professor and still talking about a test you took in high school Is pathetic. Like no one cares lol
SATs are correlated with IQ, IIRC the r^2 has gone down over time but this dude looks old af. He got a shit score, is probably above average intelligence but not at the level expected for people in those schools.
Like you said, there are state school kids just as intelligent. Ivy League is about class, connections, and holistics, more so than intelligence.

i briefly worked with academic types and I don't think I heard a single one ever refer to their SAT score, and they were some smart people. It is the equivalent of talking about how awesome you were at high school football when you're feeling insecure next to an NFL player
Jump in the discussion.

Yeah that was kind of the point I was tryna make but you explained it better. SAT is just for undergrad admissions. But continuing to cope about it might be reflective of a wider insecurity - and looking at this dudes Twitter he clearly doesn't belong at Yale
