Honestly, I've always blamed the Ming Dynasty for burning the Treasure Fleet and the Qing Dynasty for being so r-slurred that tgey thought that if they ignored the Mayos, they would just go away.

Didn't the Qing also antagonize and oppress all Han Chinese too?

You honestly have to wonder how a less r-slurred dynasty would've handled the bongs.

The Qing didn't rule the han chinese through oppression, but through a mixture of flattery of the han upper classes and carrot and stick for the plebs. Otherwise they wouldn't have lasted that long when outnumbered by their subject 50 to 1

They likewise didn't expect the UK to go to war with them since they were London's biggest trade partner. This analysis wasn't totally wrong since parliament was really not sure it wanted to go to war with China to defend the honor of drug dealers in canton

The main culprit of the latter Qing's collapse was their stupidly low taxation rate; the taiping rebel could outraise them in tax money just by holding the lower yangtze. The low taxation prevented investment in industrialisation, and it stopped them from increasing the size of the state. There were only one or two bureaucrats per million citizen, which made the system underpowered and vulnerable to corruption as degree holders indebted themselves to buy government positions they then had to pay back

Tl;dr the qing were more and less r-slurred than we think

The Qing are interesting because they are the last conquest dynasty (AKA those formed by :marseythroatsinging: invaders from the steppe) and from the start they tried to avoid the things that collapsed previous conquest dynasties like the Yuan (mongols)

Their solutions created a period of peace that saw Chinese population triple over a hundred and fifty years, but it brought China's rural areas to unprecedented ecological degradation because of overcrowding; as discussed their taxation scheme shows the limit of libertarianism (the fiscal kind) as other states with deeper pockets began to prey on the Qing.

The Qing were once wild and randy horse warriors who founded a pretty based Manchu empire under Nuhaqi (who got a guest appearance in Temple of Doom as the urn of ashes on the lazy susan at the beginning). The Manchu were actually invited into China after a revolution overthrew the Ming dynasty and the last Ming Emperor An Heroed after killing his own wives and kids. They were a tiny minority ruling over a vast majority and so they decreed that all Han men should cut their hair in a single ponytail Manchu style. That way nobody could tell who was Manren and who was Hanren.

The Han really only turned against them due to the general c*ntery of the Dowager Emperess Cíxǐ.
