>As someone with insulin resistance, I support this message. Currently in a plateau myself that's causing the scale to creep up so obviously calorie deficit clearly isn't enough for me, especially as a larger person.

If the scale is creeping up then you aren't in a calorie deficit :marseyxd:

>Bruh I'm eating 1100 cals a day and working out 3x a week, and it took me 4 months to lose 4lbs and I've gained back 2 like what is this shit 😭

Probably didn't include the Starbucks drinks and weekly "cheat day" into the equation :marseyhealthy:

>Thanks for saying this. I'm so sick of people claiming that as long as calories in are less than claories out you will lose weight. It's just not true because the PCOS adapts and decides how many calories our mitochodria are goinig to burn but we're still expected to function at 100% even if our brains are in the process of switching themselves off from a lack of calories and nutrients.

Ah yes, brain switch themselves off the second you aren't consuming over 3000 calories a day.

In the last 50 years, two theories have arisen that have ultimately been devastating for the average American: Pop Tarts should have frosting; and chips should come in Family and Party sizes, but you need not prove you have a family or party.

Pop Tarts are delicious, but only one is sufficient. However, the foil bags they come in contain always two Pop Tarts--and it's not resealable, so it's a fact that you'll always be eating an even number. And after you eat two, you always want a third (I do). But a third really means a fourth. And four means five. Do you see where I'm going? How am I expected to stop?

Second: chips are delicious. But why don't they come in individual sizes? I've never seen that. Instead, they come in bags that you could fit a baby in, and you're expected always to eat the whole bag all at once. My typing Doritos I've got here say that they're only 320 calories per serving. But I have a Redditor bag: 35 servings. Using multiplication on a calculator, we get 2200 calories: more than your DRV. However, multiple meals requires multiple Pop Tarts which themselves require multiple Redditor bags of Doritos.

Anyway this and men in general are why people assume I'm supposedly morbidly obese (scales are unhealthy, and I don't understand why people think this about me: they're not my doctors!?!?!?)

:marseyconfused2: ancient doctors wrote about diet and excercise all the time

Hippocrates said being fat makes you sick so you should eat right and exercise

so you don't be like a fat Scythian

:marseylongpost2: Hippocrates went on and on about Scythians were flabby impotent fat fats who don't get enough exercise :derpwhy:

" They are flabby and squat at first, because, as in Egypt, they are not swathed(?);[443] and then they pay no attention to horsemanship, so that they may be adepts at it; and because of their sedentary mode of life; for the males, when they cannot be carried about on horseback, sit the most of their time in the wagon, and rarely practise walking, because of their frequent migrations and shiftings of situation; and as to the women, it is amazing how flabby and sluggish they are. The Scythian race are tawny from the cold, and not from the intense heat of the sun, for the whiteness of the skin is parched by the cold, and becomes tawny.

21. It is impossible that persons of such a constitution could be prolific, for, with the man, the sexual desires are not strong, owing to the laxity of his constitution, the softness and coldness of his belly, from all which causes it is little likely that a man should be given to venery; and besides, from being jaded by exercise on horseback, the men become weak in their desires. On the part of the men these are the causes; but on that of the women, they are embonpoint and humidity; for the womb cannot take in the semen, nor is the menstrual discharge such as it should be, but scanty and at too long intervals; and the mouth of the womb is shut up by fat and does not admit the semen; and, moreover, they themselves are indolent and fat, and their bellies cold and soft.[444] From these causes the Scythian race is not prolific. simple case studies can prove some people simply don't get fat even when they eat more. there are differences in not only metabolism (burn rate) but absorption rates and storage rates. i've read one study where a guy went up in daily intake by 600 cal without any other changes and didn't gain a pound.

this doesn't stop thermodynamics from winning in meaningful calorie deficient. !commenters

There something called non exercise activity thermogenesis that ramps up in some people when they over eat. I doubt there are big differences in absorption. Like why would his absorption work normal when he ate normal maintenance, if his absorption is different he should be losing weight on -600 cal.

sure and sometimes when people do light/moderate exercise they don't lose weight cause other uses down regulate.

i'm just speculating but the intestines isn't just like a dumb osmotic membrane, but instead an extremely complex organ with both extreme fine grain and board levels of control. and a whole digestive ecosystem inside. one can imagine mechanisms than encourage or discourage the absorption of certain molecules broadly speaking. this is course obviously true for various salts and whatnot, which is why drinking distilled water isn't actually the problem many people make it out to be.

this paper: https://www.bmj.com/rapid-response/2011/10/31/unabsorbed-calories-important-consideration mentions a non overweight woman of 34 that ate 6500 calories a day. which is honestly kind of a mind boggling amount. yes she lead a sedentary life

An interesting example of high calorie consumption by a sedentary individual that was not resulting in weight gain was broadcast on USA National Public Radio on November 26, 2004. Mary-Ann Beltran, a low-income single mom was enrolled in a research project in which every piece of food she ate the day before was methodically recorded by a researcher, Jenny Donaldson. On the day before the interview, Ms. Beltran had consumed 6,501 calories as calculated by Donaldson. Correspondent Patricia Neighmond's remarked that, "Sixty-five hundred calories is high, particularly when you consider the average daily caloric intake for women of Mary-Ann's age and height is about 2'000 calories. And although Beltran is not overweight now, at age 34, if she keeps eating this way, she's at risk." For me, this interview raises two interesting questions. First, why isn't Beltran already overweight and second, what reason do we have to suspect that she will ever become overweight?

This one example doesn't seem that iron clad, and I think it's telling that the author makes cows fatter for a living now.

This is easily explained by the guy being in a caloric deficit prior to the study.

If 600 calories got the man to maintenance calories then he wouldn't gain any weight

no he was weight stable before hand. they also did the ramp up in 2 steps neither of which did he show weight gain. this case study was pretty old, this isn't a new result.

it's also true the exercise doesn't guarantee calories deficient. the body can shift around calories usage depends on how ur using ur body, normalizing to a particular metabolic rate. they've done studies showing that hunter gather tribes don't use significantly more calories per day than an office worker. again, with enough exercise of course the energy must come from somewhere, train like a marathoner and of course you will lose weight... but just moderate activity doesn't guarantee it.

further more the way we measure food calories doesn't really reflect their availability to us. certain foods (like proteins) are quite inefficient to turn into calories and may have as low as 60% bioavailability. this of course is complex and different proteins have differing amount of bioavailability, some closer to 90% others closer to 60%. this may even differ between people as they may have slight differences in how they process proteins.

the body is just more complex and simple calories in calories out, and some people need to exert more will than others (unfortunately) ...

but like i said, it doesn't mean thermodynamics ultimately rules at some level. learning to push it to that level is a good skill

I asked chatgtp

You see alot of people claim, especially fat redditors that they are on 500 calories incapable of loosing weight. Is there any confirmed cases of this being true?

In most cases, claims of being on an extremely low-calorie diet (e.g., 500 calories per day) while not losing weight are due to miscalculations rather than a true metabolic anomaly. Scientific studies overwhelmingly show that weight loss follows the basic principle of calories in vs. calories out (CICO)—if you're in a caloric deficit, you will lose weight.

Possible Explanations for These Claims:

1. Underestimating Intake – People often miscalculate portion sizes or forget to count certain foods, snacks, or liquid calories (e.g., coffee creamers, sauces, or oils).

2. Metabolic Adaptation – Prolonged extreme dieting can lead to a reduced metabolic rate, but not to the extent that a 500-calorie diet would maintain weight.

3. Water Retention – Factors like high sodium intake, hormonal fluctuations, or stress can cause water retention, masking fat loss.

4. Medical Conditions – Conditions like hypothyroidism, PCOS, or Cushing's syndrome can slow metabolism, but they do not completely prevent weight loss on an extreme deficit.

5. Binge Episodes – Some may eat 500 calories on certain days but have untracked high-calorie days that balance out the deficit.

6. Non-Adherence – Some may misreport or even deceive themselves about their intake.

Are There Any Documented Cases of "True" 500-Calorie Non-Loss?

No scientifically verified cases exist where a person truly consumed 500 calories consistently and did not lose weight. Studies on starvation diets (e.g., the Minnesota Starvation Experiment) show that even on low intakes, significant weight loss occurs. In extreme cases like The World's Heaviest Man (Manuel Uribe) and The Fasting Doctor (Angus Barbieri, who fasted for 382 days), weight loss was inevitable.

Bottom Line:

Unless a person has an extreme medical anomaly (which would be exceedingly rare), if someone is claiming to eat 500 calories daily without losing weight, they are almost certainly miscalculating, retaining water, or not accurately tracking their intake.

If you are using a calorie calculator that is made for metabolically normal persons, you are going to think that you are eating at a deficit when you are not.

already needing a break 2 shifts into my new job.

Neurodivergent burnout sucks. I just got a new job and I was hired on as full time which is a good thing, and I'm getting paid fairly. But my first week I'm already getting over 30 hours and I'm SO TIRED. I just want one day off in between shifts to reset and decompress. I truly can't cope with working full time while battling a chronic physical illness (PCOS- I'm on medication to help combat obesity caused by it) as well as being neurodivergent. I wish I could find something higher paying that was part time, but jobs are hard to come by where I live. And I'm already dealing with a demand put on me by my mom to attend a family party next Saturday for my cousin's daughter's first birthday.

It's gonna be a no from me. I'm not purposely avoiding my family. I just need a break. Not to mention I have a doctor's appointment that morning. I'm so tired! I just need more time to myself.

lmao what kind of app are they using?

I don't count calories personally because I have enough self-control to not overeat without it, but my impression of modern tracking apps is that you enter in your calories eaten AND your weight over time. The app can figure out if you're eating more than or less than what your body is burning due to changes in your weight (gaining weight -> more, obviously). They'll then typically calculate a mean daily calories burned for you personally.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

They're just lying at the end of the day. If you put your weight into those apps it'll still give you such a proportional amount of calories you won't have that hard a time unless you're binge eating. You put a morbidly obese weight in there with no exercise and it'll still allow you like 3K calories a day in order to stay at the safe 2 lbs a week.

There are variances to metabolism with many contributing factors, but there is a limit to those differences. Fatties love to use the fact of different metabolic rates existing to shift all blame from their habits and lifestyle to something out of their control.

An inactive skinny short woman might maintain their weight at 1200 calories a day. A very active athletic muscular man might maintain their weight at 3000 calories a day. No adult human can eat 1000 calories a day, move at all, and get fat.
