that's why 11 million people watched their most recent show
Compare that to the age of broadcast tv. Star Trek: The Next Generation for example.
The show reached almost 12 million viewers in its 5th season, with the series finale in 1994 watched by over 30 million viewers.
And that was still considered a genre show that was not fully mainstream.
Kids these days don't understand just how fragmented audiences are compared to the old days. It used to be that if you wanted your TV show to even exist it had to appeal to literally millions of people. They were able to get way bigger audiences than when Disney tries to appeal to the mainstream. The difference is shows didn't suck butt back then.
Something I've noticed about the d+ shows that I've actually watched is they're a fricking slog to get through. They seem to outline a story that should probably be a 90-120 minute movie and then stretch that to 7-8 hours over 8 episodes because they want it to be a show. Every episode is filled with minutes long shots of a character looking at an object or walking slowly from A to B. No dialogue or exposition, just blatant obvious padding.
Redditors go on about how TV series are a better format to movies because it let's them tell more story as if the average script can be stretched out to 8 episodes. Nearly all TV was episodic for decades with actual storytelling left to cinema for a reason.

Also have the problem of "good luck knowing who some of these are if you didn't watch x amount of another show"
Because they have no budget so they have to pad the entire narrative out with plot lines and characters that don't take a bunch of VFX but this never leads anywhere either.
This could work if the writers in charge knew what they were doing but the entire writing room is a usual millennial mess so the overall story just comes across as disjointed and clunky.

Haven't the differences in medium enabled different marketing strategies to ensure profitability (in at least some cases) though? You don't need 30 million viewers if the 11 million that will spend money on merch are still there, and on e.g. YouTube you can run much more targeted ad campaigns.

IDK what the numbers for Disney+ in comparison to other shows are but despite a majority of the post-OT movies being garbage people still went to see them. And that's not touching on the merch, which is inevitably the real cash cow.
They arent making money on merch anymore. They lose money on merch and the movies to the point they havent even made back the money it cost them to buy starwars and its been almost 10 years. Kids dont play with toys now and they lost a lot of the adults who would buy toys. You can usually find star wars stuff at discount stores like Ollies for 80% off about a month after it comes out.
Disney+ shows production budget so far: $1.4 billion (doesn't include marketing budget)
And Disney+ has not earned a single dime ever since it was launched and instead is a massive multibillion dollar money sinkhole. I think around late 2023/early 2024 is when it just started making somewhat of a profit.

Anyone that didn't drop star wars after the first line of tfa opening crawl deserves the trash they get.
Stopping caring about star wars thanks too the prequels could be acceptable too, but unlike Disney slop they at least spawned some enjoyable stuff for both kids and adults while not invalidating the ot or forcing 6 billion nonsense retcons.
Star wars as good story was dead after prequel trilogy. But at least George had the foresight of making interesting world building which spawned shit ton of good spin-off media.
Spin-off media that Disney killed the second they bought the franchise.
Which always seemed so brain dead. The EU content had an inbuilt audience (in the already content hungry Star Wars fandom) and stories they could draw from for at least a decade and they were like 'lol nah, that's not cannon. Our new sequel trilogy is the only new content'.
From Disney's perspective the star wars EU "fandom" may as well have not existed. It was the same size/meaning as the dungeons and dragons novels fandom. Fifty nerds buying laughably bad genre books are not the sort of audience a company the size of Disney cares about, so the EU was just an appendix to be snipped clean
But then they got hacks like Chuck Wendig to write new Star Wars books. They have every appearance of thinking that Star Wars was a pile of shit, but popular shit, so they didn't have to care about what fans wanted or what story they were trying to tell because they expected the fanboys to mindlessly consoom.
Which many of them did, but with each subpar release they lost more and more fans as they reached their limit on how crap content they could tolerate. So now they're like US comics, hiring people to intentionally antagonise the existing fanbase they don't like. While trying to replace it with the alleged millions of women and queers who totally would have been fans if only they'd felt represented, and not been driven away by the scary altright chuds.
Basically, the people in charge now always thought Star Wars was bad, so they never felt any need to make their new products appealing to the existing audience.
True, but they treated it as a chance to make their audience eat the diversity slop rather than thinking that the final product should have any value outside of that. A better idea would have but been to intentionally make it lame and gay.
It might have been a copyright issue. Far from all the EU stuff was purely LucasArts, I imagine, so just buying LucasArts wouldnt necessarily mean they got to use all that content themselves, or they would have had to pay royalties out their butt to do so.
"Oh yeah there was only a single battle of any importance after Endor and then all the Empire just fricking left...also all the jedi are dead."
If JJ wasn't such a confirmed hack on the star trek front as well I'd be convinced he was a secret trekkie that hated how big starwars got. I STILL think that about Rian Johnson because I've never met a single soul that liked that movie that wasn't a brain diseased trekkie or a woman who wanted to frick Angst Vader.
I've noticed a lot more subhuman morons at work praising slop and trash from Netflix and other shit - these peeps i know to be to be absolutely not wingcucked, they don't have a political thought outside of voting in elections and certainly don't have woke moralities
Instead they genuinely sincerely just have fricking low standards and little capacity to distinguish between quality and subpar quality, like not between subjective taste where peeps can have wildly divergent top 10 lists or whatever, but an absolute incapacity due to their subhuman nature to actually grasp the differences between quality
Like you can have people not like Godfather, cuz they don't like violence, maybe even the odd guy sincerely liking LOTR at all cuz they just really hate fantasy
But what I'm talking about are these popcorn-guzzling slopeaters who would rate the Human-centipede equivalent to fricking Godfather, or think the fricking BloodRayne movies are good just because they liked it!
Like i don't have a single musical aptitude in my body - my family would discuss this Mama Mia theater show and how certain singers were off-beat and discuss the notes of the band, and I would have no proper idea what was being said.
Like I have no aptitude to grasp when opera singers do decently versus doing spectacularly, some subhumans just are not capable of judging even comparative quality of TV shows or movies
Disney+ is just the modern equivalent of the direct-to-home-video slop Disney used to produce in the 90s and 2000s except they've broadened the scope of what slop they're able to peddle via all of the acquisitions.
And they use it as an excuse not to release them to purchase anymore, expecting you to permanently lease them through streaming and put up with any changes and censorship they may decide to impose after.

Even if they're making money on paper, the Star Wars brand used to be worth God knows how many billions of dollars. Like when the prequels came out, no matter how bad they were everyone watched them because they were Star Wars. During the time Disney has owned it they've wiped out that goodwill from the audience, and it shows as this stuff gradually declines in ratings.
You don't exactly need to be a brilliant economist to figure this one out. Disney bought Star Wars for USD 4 billion in 2012. If they had instead bought some ETFs, that would be worth >20 billion today. In order to have not lost money, they need to have made a profit (not revenue) of 16 billion. There's no way they're anywhere close to that, considering how expensive their movies and series have been and how few of them were profitable.

You don't compare it to the market you compare it to the rest of their offerings. Disney profited greatly from Lucasfilms. ROIC of around 3x, equating to $8B-$10B ish of profits on that purchase. There's not much they could have spent money on at the time that made similars returns (other than Marvel which they were spending as much on as possible). And this is after they botched the whole thing.
Star Wars was such a ridiculously profitable purchase that it's insane it got sold at that price at all.

If everything Disney does underperforms the market isn't that still terrible? I doubt shareholders would be mollified by "Like yeah sure instead of buying Star Wars we could have just sat on the money and collected interest and we'd all be better off, but in our defense Star Wars lost us less money than Disney+ has"

Fincel nonsense required to explain more but no, it's about outperforming your niche and Disney outperformed their niche and kept up with the greater market (5x returns from 2012-2021, they fell apart after, still up 2x though). They were a great buy in 2012 following the acquisition and an amazing buy in 2011 before the acquisition.
You can't just sit on money and collect interest unless you're buying treasury stock (generally considered to be riskless), and that was returning like 0-1% annually for the decade following Disney's acquisition of Lucasfilms.
"The entire entertainment industry seems to just be 'little girl makes her older brother's G.I. Joes wear dresses and have tea parties solely to make him mad.'"
I don't care about Star Wars shit but since all the Disney shit and from hearing about it I have had no desire to revisit the original movies from the 70s at all nor show them to my nieces. I think any and all appreciation of them as contemporary fantasy films has somehow been tainted by everything Disney has done without even engaging in any of it
I read something just recently about how much Jew Hollywood hated George Lucas. He was an outsider and apparently him working so closely with the guy who wrote the Hero's Journey that Star Wars used is some super Jew hating chud.
Doesn't make a lot of sense considering how many successful franchises Lucas went in to make and how closely he worked with Spielberg but remember at the end of the day Jews love money more than they hate yt people I guess.
I heard he was hated by his also rich neighbors because — I don't remember the exact story — but it was something like he owned a fancy mansion plus land but he sold much of the extra land so a more regular neighborhood could be built.
And obviously the nearby mansion nimbys hated that
i remember breadtuber maggie mae fish is a disney starshitter who hates the heroes journey guy solely because people use it not being in the sequels to criticize rey for being a mary sue
lol, no they aren't. What delusional cope is this bullshit?
it apparently cost 25 million per episode of she hulk which is an abomination unto all humanity. Meanwhile godzilla minus 1 supposedly cost only 11 million and everyone loved it. Disney is laundering money/burning it in dumpsters and you can't convince me otherwise.
Yes, the parks are staying profitable but I highly doubt anything else is. They're merchandising is shit and their media is even bigger shit.

Have they tried making better shows?

They don't seem to want to. My understanding is Andor and the start of The Mandalorian were good, and the rest has been forgettable-to-dreadful.

Pretty sure there was a report not that long ago saying they haven't really seen profit from it. Then there Is the viewership for their Disney+ slop consistently getting lower.

And obviously the nearby mansion nimbys hated that

lol, no they aren't.
