I'm more surprised that the jannies of /r/startrek are allowing this kind of criticism. The studio had /r/star_trek banned for less

I honestly don't get why they do this shit with the constant callbacks to earlier shows and movies. I'm one of the tiny fraction of the audience that actually gets all of them and I hate it, so who the heck are they doing it for? All it does is remind me how far off from real Trek this is and that I'd rather be watching "Yesterday's Enterprise" for the 5th time.

Her club host, Julius (Augusto Bitter), is a half-black/half-white survivor from the planet Cheron (TOS' "Let That Be Your Last Battlefield"). Seeing a survivor from Cheron undermines Spock's grim assertion that there were no survivors of that planet's self-inflicted genocide.

They do this all the time where they do a callback to something they clearly don't understand at all and it ends up being completely the opposite of what it should be. :marseyraging:

This does seem to be the new trend: reboot something, stuff it full of memberberries for the original fans (so you hope to keep them from criticising it) and have the characters Do The Thing/Say The Thing, because that's what the character is all about, right?

Hence all the callbacks: "look, they Did The Thing! You love The Thing, so you have to love our version, right?"

NuTrek is rubbish, and I'm sorry they spoiled using a good actress like Michelle Yeoh by creating what could have been a great character in Discovery then ruined the character by going for Mirrorverse straight out of the gate and turning her into Le Evil Empress. I hated the Section 31 idea when it first happened in DS9 and every idiot scriptwriter who wants to be dark'n'edgy and "but consider grey morality, am I not sophisticated?" just uses it as a lazy trope.

So the Section 31 movie is crap? Wow, who could possibly have foreseen that?

Jump in the discussion.

"but consider grey morality, am I not sophisticated?"

When you're a teenager this "morally grey" stuff appeals to you because you're still trying to figure out what's right and wrong. Unfortunately there's a lot of writers out there still at the mental age of 16.

I hated the Section 31 idea when it first happened in DS9

It was infuriating. This kind of hand-wringing about "maybe we're the real bad guys" doesn't belong in Star Trek. If you don't want to write Star Trek then write for another show.

DS9 worked as the worst Starfleet would go, and even then some of the spec ops type plots were really stupid.

The problem is Star Trek really isn't supposed to be a "fate of the galaxy depends on X" sort of franchise. That stuff only works when it's clearly the exception, but writoids don't understand that and make it the rule for their slop content.

In the Star Trek moral universe, most problems can be solved by diplomacy, science, and understanding, and most of the rest can be solved by phasers and torpedos. Scheming and subterfuge are for bad guys

Yeah but you need a 100 IQ (realistically even higher tbf) for that. Most libertarianwood writers are nepobabies whose low intelligence is only not more apparent because their lack of creativity obscures it.

Michelle Yeoh

I'm convinced that all the supposed love for her character is just bots being used by the studio to claim success. I'm surprised she's even willing to keep playing such a bad part.

She seems to take loads of roles just for the work. Probably still has the mindset of 'this could dry up any second, so do as much as you can'.

Yeah, if the DISCO crowd had any talent (but that's a contradiction in terms), the character of Captain Phillipa Georgiou could have been great: a better Janeway. But of course they had to go full-tilt for the most stupid and offensive version possible. Kill her off fast, give her a terrible end, and bring her back as Mirrorverse Evil Empress so they can be all edgy and cool.

God I hate when they do that. The writers are thinking "I don't want to make Star Trek, I want to make the opposite of Star Trek. I know! I'll use the mirror universe!"

The only time it's ever been brought back in a good way is that episode of Enterprise with Empress Sato.

Cynthia Rothrock made lots of movies in Hong Kong around the 1980s. She had to move there because nobody in Hollywood gives a shit if a woman can actually do martial arts. Why would you? You can just have some 90lb waif punch the bad guy in the face and knock him out and everyone will cheer for girl power.

It's not great but the martial arts scenes are really good and there's a lot of them. Oh and some jokes about how all the pervy Chinese guys are trying to seduce the white woman because she's white.

I guess I've only seen a few of her movies from back in China. I'd recommend Supercop (a typical Jackie Chan movie) and The Heroic Trio (a batshit insane superhero movie).
