!bookworms do you guys occasionally spend more money to get pretty editions of books you like or want to read?
Pic related is from a hardcover edition of "The Origin of the Species" I found at the bookstore and loved.
I recently ordered a copy of Kafka's "The Trial" by the same publisher "Martin Claret".
Also, I think the Brazilian edition of the book "Vikings: Children of Elm and Ash" by Neil Price looks better than the American edition.
This one in English
And this is the Brazilian by "Crítica" which I have. It's a paperback, but I still think it's pretty.

I don't generally buy nice copies of books I like, but I do like to buy older copies of some of the fantasy books I'm into. In general I don't like the look of the high quality fantasy or Sci-fi reprints because they look to clean and cool, the only one I actually like is the Folio ASOIAF. Instead I much prefer the look of the old school fantasy and Sci-fi art style, like Elric, Dune, and all of the Gene Wolfe books.
The other main reason that I don't buy nice copies a lot of the time, is that many of the books I'm interested in are very niche and hard to find a well kept copy in the first place. That or it was not popular enough to warrant a fancy copy. One of the exceptions are the Junji Ito collections, of which I have all but Uzumaki, and all of them are very nice.
I have a few other nice copies but they are mostly gifts, such as the Barnes and Nobles Lovecraft Collection and Divine Comedy, Penguin Clothbound copies of most of the Christian and Hellenistic classics, Romance of the Three Kingdoms(this was one of the few that I did buy for myself), Author's Illustrated copies of all three major middle earth books, and the really nice deluxe anniversary copies of the first three Dune books.

I want the Folio ASoIaF but I can't justify it. Juniper recently put out a new ASoIaF set that looks better than their first one but idk if it's $300 good.

You should already expect my response.
I've shelled out for leatherbound versions of Imitation of Christ by Thomas Kempis, St. Faustina's Diary and most of the writings of St. Teresa of Avila in addition to a copy of Confessions, and of course some nice Bibles for the house. The paperback cover of the Diary is not very aesthetic and it's one of my favorite devotional/private revelation works.
I also stand to inherit my parents collection, which is more extensive and has hardback sets of the Summa and the collected works of St. Francis de Sales as well as some sets of seminary textbooks, a collection of the Ante-Nicene Fathers and they're buying the Bp. Barron "Word on Fire" Bible series which has theology interlaced in and very nice covers, they're pricey though. I think it'll have been around $1k when they finish releasing.

They outfitted one of the rooms attached to the den as a library with big cozy chairs, it's nice.
Comparably far less nice than our digs in either Manila or the US and also located in a spot with poor lighting but I forgot the most important family Bible of all:
It's got side by side translations. I bring it with us a few times a week when we go to local vernacular Mass to try to follow along. @C333

I wish I were in the US to grab a pic but we picked up an absolutely massive antique Bible that had been used as a lectionary in a Baptist congregation just for fun. The size of it is very impressive. It dwarfs any Catholic versions I've seen in person.
For actual use we have kinda midrange leatherbound versions of the KJV, RSVCE/NRSVCE, NABRE and the Jerusalem Bible with Tolkein's translation of Jonah. I stopped spending as much though because I don't want to damage anything fancy with my grubby little paws and I just use my kindle anyway so it's mostly a vanity project.

That's where I got my new meditations book they said it's an exclusive. They had a ton of other imitation leather books of the same run that I wanted to get but like common sense, constitution, the wealth of nations, federalist papers, etc. they were only 15 bucks so I may go shopping here soon
The only one of that run I am able to find is the one I bought at the store

I had a nice, giant, leatherbound, 1960s, two-part volume of The West Point Atlas of American Wars, but I gave them to my Dad as an anniversary gift
I tried to bribe military history neurodivergent, Aevann, with scans of them once, and he said they were too neurodivergent even for him

Yes, I make fun of people for buying Funko Pop figurines and then shamefully buy copies of books instead of just checking them out from my library. I don't have anything really nice or rare but I do have a pristine copy of Don Juan that retails for a couple hundred dollars, but I got mine for much less than that.
Also, the English were done dirty by the translation of the title of "The Trial". "The Process" is a much better title IMO.

I got the LOTR author illustrated edition which cost like $60-$70 on sale at the time because of the maps and stuff drawn by JRR Tolkien being included were cool. It has now dropped even more to like $50 and the cover was pretty plain as a throwback to the original cover. But besides that and the matching Silmarillion since I didn't have a copy I don't spend extra for a special edition of a book and usually just pirate them for my kindle.

On Amazon it is like $40-$50 and I would recommend it at that price. Not worth it at $120 the quality isn't there at that price point but it has a lot of JRR Tolkien's personal drawings scattered throughout and has two separate maps by Christopher Tolkien. It is all in one book like he originally wanted so it is harder to read but with his own drawings throughout it is an interesting way to see exactly what he was going for.

I've got a really pretty leather impression cover of The Art of War from the NY library bookstore, Ik it's basically tourist bait but it's still real pretty
Jump in the discussion.

Tourist bait why?
My copy of "The Art of War" is super disappointing, it looks textbookish lol, also I never read it lol, my dad gave me as a gift years ago.
Jump in the discussion.
No email address required.
Tourist bait basically bc it was pretty overpriced and placed like right near the front desk. It was obviously supposed to be like a souvenir "I went to the NYPL and got this book" kinda thing that I normally wouldn't go for but it actually looked really cool and I didn't have a copy before so I caved.
I also have a pretty good Jungle Book hardcover:
I like the minimalistic design and how the lines kinda look like a dense forest of trees. Jungle Book was always one of my favorites as a teen so it's worth it for me.

Is it true that the origin of species in its original form is a pamphlet at most in length and most of its bulk consists of publishers adding extremely long forewords and background information over and over?
Jump in the discussion.
No email address required.
The hardcover I have is a translation from the 1872 6th edition (the final one made by Darwin), but I have the original 1859 edition in English on my kindle. Definitely not a pamphlet, there are no long forewords, the chapters are lengthy as Darwin was making its case. He backed off in some things on the 6th edition because of backlash which is very gay and why people recommend reading the first.
I recommend it to !biology if you're interested in the history of the field and if you're curious to see how well it stands today. It's a very dry read and Drawin writes about stuff like breeding and crossing pigeons and he also devoted a chapter to the geological record.

Almost all the Thiagos I know are with h, but they're rather young. @BrasilIguana
Also, many Brazilians like to decorate names to make them sound fancy, but 90% of the time is just tacky.
For instance the name "Priscila" but there are people who name their daughters "Pryscylla".
There are some generational fashion names too. Many gen alphas were named "Enzo" or "Pietro" for instance.
And there are ugly butt names which are thankfully becoming rare like "Volnei, Valdirene, Josileide, Cleyde, Claunidey, Rudinéi, Leydy".
