Your number one problem is combing it forward to cover your forehead, that's the signature look from 2010 that every young male celebrity had. Combing it backwards or to the sides could fix your problems.
For the cut, it should be tapered, ie, the longest pieces are on the top of your head and as it goes down to your neck it gets shorter.
This guy has longer hair but brushed back. You can see the top pieces are probably 5x as long as the ones on his neck. But it's still not a fade. I'm assuming you're avoiding fades because it requires more frequent haircuts.
This is the style pretty much every guy has in this decade. Long on top, short on the sides.
In both of these examples there's absolutely no sideburn hair. If you can tuck your hair behind your ears, it's too long.
