Summary This content was produced in Russia where the law restricts coverage of Russian military operations in Ukraine MOSCOW, Sept 27 (Reuters) - Farmers are among the Russians being drafted into the military, President Vladimir Putin told a meeting with officials on Tuesday, signalling potential further risks for the 2023 crop.

Russia is the world's largest wheat exporter.

Autumn is a busy season for farmers as they sow winter wheat for the next year's crop and harvest soybeans and sunflower seeds.

"I would also like to address regional heads and the heads of agricultural enterprises.

As part of the partial mobilisation, agricultural workers are also being drafted.

  1. It takes years to get good at farming.

  2. If you run out of male gigolos in a war society still runs. If you run out of experienced farmers lots of someones are going to be starving to death.

  3. Farming is one of those few jobs that military will try to actively avoid taking during a war with conscription unless a whole load of other jobs are dead before they reach that group.

  4. Pretty sure even during WW2 farmers were some of the last groups to be conscripted but don't take my word for it I heard it from another commentator.

You are sorta right for now but its actually 600k now if we count the previous 300k so far. About 0.42% of the Russian population has had to fight in Ukraine. Or about 1.26 out of every 300 Russians have participated in the Ukraine war now.

For comparison leading cause of death in Russia is circulatory system disease with 640 deaths per 100,000 Russians, which is about 0.64%.

So in conclusion - There is a small but real chance that in the near future (0-4 more years) from now the leading cause of death in Russia will become participating in the Ukraine war.

The Russians are doing dogshit tbh but a lot of things that end up being "this kills the Putler" tier news are often like this.

>Russia does something

>It's over for the vatniks we're winning

>Wait we do this too

>Quietly ignore

Reuters isn't raising this in terms of framing Russian military desperation but in terms of framing next years possible food crisis.

Also the bigger issue next year is fertilisers tbh. Especially for Africa where most of the worry is most people there didn't eat much wheat in the first place. They had their own staple crops especially for the subsistence communities which is the majority anyways. How those crops are going to do this year is the worry.

Did they use much fertiliser anyway? As long as Europe, Asia east of the middle east and America's production isn't hit I doubt there'd be much of an issue. All the major producers seen to have secured fertiliser supplies, we've even been giving it in aid to Nepal and Sri Lanka.

I'm less sure on that. What I've read seems to allude to its importance but never actually states it so I might be misreading.

And it might matter more to some countries than others. Like Nigeria for example is the world's leading cassava producer which is a popular staple there. So if a fertiliser "drought" hits worse case means that they'll just stop exporting it which sucks for Cameroon and Togo in this situation but Nigeria ends up "fine". It might be like that.

Or I might be talking out of my butt.

Produce hasn't inflated to twice as much since 2019 where you are?
