Most North Koreans don't want to defect for a number of reasons. Their families will be punished. (Koreans care a lot about their blood relatives.) Or tbqh if they're smart they understand that if they defect they're going to be in a totally alien world where they have no idea how the frick anything works and they're just going to be on welfare, completely alone in a foreign country.

That's the slave labor agency workers North Korea sends to work over the Chinese border in Jilin province. The Chinese-Koreans help smuggle them into South Korea. Everyone knows about it, including the provincial police, but the Chaoxianzu are a protected autonomous ethnicity with a good reputation for being a model minority so the local cops don't want to make a scene.

I think there will be a significant number, but I'd also bet they chose soldiers they have collateral on like people whose families are back in NK and liable to be punished. It's gonna be less than people think because of that. There are probably some very sad stories there too, like people discussing deserting with their families to ask for forgiveness for the consequences they'll suffer.

I found this book in the library with an introduction by a Civil War vet, a real war hero, (I can't find his name because google cockblocks you from actually searching for anything except local businesses) from about 1907. It's really explicit in saying that we're happy that the Japanese won because they won because they're asian, and Americans want asians to beat eurotrash imperialism. Also has some very accurate criticisms of Korea under the Joseon dynasty. The caste system, oppression of women, rampant forced prostitution, etc. It's fascinating to see how people were, to put it bluntly, way smarter and well informed back then. At least Americans.
