My pops used to tell me I had hair on my arms because I was part chimp. He’d play monkey sounds off his phone and tell me it was a voicemail from my real father. No one can ever look me in the eyes and tell me they understand what I’ve been through

Huh
I'ma need a bigger bag for the cohort
Tryna make a millionaire out of slum dogs
Bet that, head crack, blunt force
Cozy with the east Africans up north
Where seven make a three, turn a ten by law
Crescent moon wink, when I blinked it was gone
Left the crib, smacked, no sheath on the sword
Made it by the skin of my teeth, thank God
'03, momma rockin' Liz Claiborne
Had her stressin' up the wall playin' Mary J. songs
Rainy day came, couldn't rinse the stains off
Long way to go, we already came far
Story stayed the same, it was never madе up
Threw me loose changе, look at what I made of it
When the mood change, I'ma poker-face 'em
It's a new day, who got all the aces?
Who be foldin' late? Who know when to play dead?
Who sit up straight when the roof caved in?
Had a full plate, you ain't wanna split it
Tell it to you straight, you ain't wanna listen
Cup runneth over the brim
Bust open, there's no closin' the lid
Drumroll, here go my lil' entrance
Gung ho, I'm the one that go get it
Five O's on me like the Olympics
Pure gold, somethin' told me, "Don't mix it"
Caught a feelin', momma had me out Temple
Not religious, we was really out Philly
Livin' on the fly tryna wing it
We got us a fire to rekindle
Redirect the fight where it's meant for
Triumph over plight and immense loss
Ride alone at night, I get clear thoughts
Caught a couple slights and I veered off
Saw another height, had my ears poppin'
Walked outside, it was still gorgeous
Sharp incisors reveal slowly
In the dark inside, we was real hungry
On a seven of the five, we was real hungry
Uh, niggas still drummin'
Foot shook ground when I stepped on it
Didn't look back when I broke soil
'Cause every time I did it would hurt more
In the dark inside, we was real hungry
On a seven of the five, we was real hungry
And I didn't look back when I broke soil
'Cause every time I did it would hurt more
Alright
Yessir, this nigga spittin'

The best prank on a child I ever heard of was an Iranian-American girl who was told around age 10 that her family had arranged to have her betrothed to a boy back in the old country. I wish I could have been there to see the look on her face.

Other than pretending to be dead these are hilarious. The acting dead prank is cruel and could really cause problems.

parents of rdrama: when are these jokes too far? How do I not frick up my kid?

Teach your kid how to safely do pranks as well. Then they'll understand it's not so serious. Also never do a prank or joke that pokes at their insecurity if they have one.

Talk to them when they need help, force them to participate in family gatherings once a year minimum. Change how you interact with your kid over the years from a strict control state to a constantly loosening hand as they figure out more and more stuff on their own. Encourage them to learn problem solving habits. Help them out if they get stuck but also require that they learn from where they got stuck. Have specific standards that you do not break.
I think the most common element for being a shit parent is to not have strict standards for how you would react. Many parents get too busy trying to trick their own kids to get the wanted results and just end up with kids that do not trust them at all.

burgers are strange. On one hand their kids take absolutely no responsibility for their lives, are incredibly sheltered, pampered, and their schools are so PC. On the other hand, regularly beating your kids is seen as normal life.

Beating your kids definitely isn't seen as normal in most communities. I'd guess only about 13% of Americans see that as ok.

I know this is supposed to be some sort of race bait but I'm pretty certain the majority of Americans support physically harming your children as a form of punishment. I don't and I'm always either alone or in the tiny minority with that opinion.
Not just an American thing either, in fact I bet support for this is higher in most other countries.

Phrasing of survey questions can be incredibly tricky, this is such a case, minute differences in phrasing will get widely different results. "Is it ever OK to use corporal punishment on a child" is likely to get a majority yes (especially if clarified to include scenarios that people are likely to agree with) but after that the degrees that people find it acceptable will vary wildly. Some people (BIPOCS) will find it as the only method of disciplining. Some people would only utilize it in scenarios where the behavior is egregious, and the child is incapable of being receptive of other methods of discipline.

I remember having a class discussion about this in high school. All the white kids thought it was weird and all the black/latinks kids thought it was normal to get hit with belts or whatever. This was the suburban Midwest, in a liberal but not woke community.

I'm a Midwest ruralcel and can't think of a single person that supports corporal punishment, or at least would admit to it. I've gotten the impression that it's more acceptable in the south for sure. But claiming it's more acceptable in the US than the rest if the world is fricking dumb.

Well it's legal in the US in all 50 states and it's not legal in some other countries (like G*rmany). But it's also clearly common. Most children in the US report being physically punished as a child so even if parents talk about "oh we would never do that" they're lying.
This is absolutely true, and makes intuitive sense as well.

It’s acceptable in the sense that you can do it without getting CPS called on you like a switch will but increasingly taboo, just Google spanking and you’ll get a million “it doesn’t work think”pieces.
Jump in the discussion.

I'm sure if you simply survey thinktank slop you'll get that result, but that's not the same as what the general public feels.
I tried finding some surveys and got a pretty wide gamut of results, probably due to either sampling or phrasing differences.
https://www.brookings.edu/research/hitting-kids-american-parenting-and-physical-punishment/
Another survey put it at 42%, but I think that was some kind of internet poll so probably had a sizable sampling error. And, either way, the majority of Americans were physically punished as a child, even in the 17-and-under age bracket, so clearly it's still pretty commonplace.
Like obviously doctors and stuff are against it because it's obviously wrong and ineffective, but most people don't actually give a shit about doctor recommendations.
