:donkeykonggenocide: Mozilla sends popup AD overlay in FurryFox for their own VPN :firecat:

Hello and welcome to @Corp's semiannual laughing at Furryfox users thread.

Little background. There are three groups of people I feel need to go.

1. Nazis.

2. Commies.

3. FurryFox users.

It today's FurryFox drama we have something not related to coping about there ever shrinking user base as Chromium browser supremacy ravages onwards to near domination.

Ads? In my FurryFox?

https://i.rdrama.net/images/16850601499871554.webp

I suspect the poster is a chud due to hiding what he is reading on twitter, a known alt-nazi website :chudsey:

Also a massive ad that dims the background and makes you click? :marseychefkiss:

Listen! We filed a Bugzilla! It's just a bug, right? RIGHT!?!?!!?!! :soycry:

Orangesite deliberates

This is pretty terrible.

And no, supporting this under the guise of trying to earn revenue away from Google is a bit silly. A pop-up is a pop-up.

A browser that goes to great lengths to block all of the annoyances of the web (e.g. pop-ups) allowing their own annoyances through is just favoritism of itself. It is no better than Google Chrome plugging Google or > > > Edge plugging Bing Chat or whatever is new on the block.

Last thing Firefox needs is to be browser with built-in ads. In this arena, the first experience is the only one that matters. Do not let it be ads.

Funny thing is Chrome has a very clean UI. It's by nature because Google automatically benefits if you use the web, and more so if you use it through Chrome. Chrome doesn't really plug Google considering Google is the default search on all major browsers except Edge, and switching to a different provider is very easy (Google services do plug Chrome, on the other hand).

Meanwhile on a new Firefox install, I have to disable pocket, sponsored shortcuts, the new pinned tab, sponsored news articles (which are also present in Chrome iirc), and skip through the faceless girl telling me about diverse colors or some shit. Firefox is still by far the better choice, but yeah it's initially a bit annoying on a fresh install.

:marseyhesright:

I've made several people switch from Chrome to Firefox this week because of the Manifest v. 3 fiasco. I told them "you'll see, it's not a memory hog like Chrome, and it's much less intrusive."

And you do this.

I love how fast the mods are locking down conversations relating to this topic.

Firefox is really sticking out for the wrong reasons today.

They do it for free for free software :marseyjanny:

Hehe, we didn't k-know y-you gois and gruls would be so upset. We will have another meeting about this thing we definitely had multiple meetings about previously and got signed off on.

Lots of upset Furryfox users. If you're a FurryFox user there are several cures.

TunnelVision, as the researchers have named their attack, largely negates the entire purpose and selling point of VPNs, which is to encapsulate incoming and outgoing Internet traffic in an encrypted tunnel and to cloak the user's IP address. The researchers believe it affects all VPN applications when they're connected to a hostile network and that there are no ways to prevent such attacks except when the user's VPN runs on Linux or Android. They also said their attack technique may have been possible since 2002 and may already have been discovered and used in the wild since then.

( . . . . )

Interestingly, Android is the only operating system that fully immunizes VPN apps from the attack because it doesn't implement option 121. For all other OSes, there are no complete fixes. When apps run on Linux there's a setting that minimizes the effects, but even then TunnelVision can be used to exploit a side channel that can be used to de-anonymize destination traffic and perform targeted denial-of-service attacks. Network firewalls can also be configured to deny inbound and outbound traffic to and from the physical interface. This remedy is problematic for two reasons: (1) a VPN user connecting to an untrusted network has no ability to control the firewall and (2) it opens the same side channel present with the Linux mitigation.

  • Sphereserf3232 : Wait apex is a source game? :marseygasp:
  • BWC : Yes, but it runs on a very modified version of the Source Engine iirc

Respawn and EA have postponed the North American Finals in the wake of the “competitive integrity” of the game being compromised. This involved a wild situation where someone was giving the pros hacks like aimbots and wallhacks as they were playing in the Finals event, effectively ruining the entire thing without anyone actually attempting to cheat. Here's what that looked like (warning: language):

This has led to a mass of complaints about Apex's anti-cheat systems, which clearly failed in a massive way for this situation. But it also speaks to just how advanced cheats have become as this is a private lobby for pros playing in an esports final.

Not that this is necessarily related, but Respawn was just hit days ago with 23 layoffs including Apex Legends developers, some of whom were longtime veterans. Though if anything, this shows that EA needs to beef up Apex's security team to some extent as something like this requires all hands, or more hands, on deck than they currently have now, it seems.

Should have learned to code better :marseysmug2:

:marseyitsover: Due to blade damage, Mars Helicopter Ingenuity will not fly again

https://www.nasa.gov/news-release/after-three-years-on-mars-nasas-ingenuity-helicopter-mission-ends

NASA's history-making Ingenuity Mars Helicopter has ended its mission at the Red Planet after surpassing expectations and making dozens more flights than planned. While the helicopter remains upright and in communication with ground controllers, imagery of its Jan. 18 flight sent to Earth this week indicates one or more of its rotor blades sustained damage during landing, and it is no longer capable of flight.

Remarkably, the letter's signees include Ilya Sutskever, the company's chief scientist and a member of its board, who has been blamed for coordinating the boardroom coup against Altman in the first place.

I recently built a browser-based word game with my friends called Sqword (sqword.com). I'm proud to say that we've been able to maintain a steady group of daily active users over the past 6 months or so despite not doing any real advertising.

Vultures will even pick at modest success stories.

Yesterday one of my collaborators googled "sqword" and to his surprise, there were tons of first-page results that weren't the sqword.com domain. These sites are "game aggregator" sites that host your app inside of an iFrame so that they can steal ad revenue from your product.

This made me angrier than it should have - not because Sqword is a cash cow - we don't run ads on the site and don't make money from it, it's just for fun - but because it was a passion project with friends, something pure and intentionally free to play WITHOUT ads. It's against my ethos as a developer, there are banners and popups everywhere. If I build an app, I believe it should either be free or it should be up-front about what the subscription or purchase price is (and then not upsell you).

I couldn't abide seeing my code monetized in this way.

The mature and responsible thing to do would have been to add a content security policy to the page. I am not mature so instead what I decided to do was render the early 2000s internet shock image Goatse with a nice message superimposed over it in place of the app if Sqword detects that it is in an iFrame.

It has been one of my greatest achievements as a dev: to live-deploy a massive goatse image to at least 8 domains that aren't mine.

Let this be a lesson to you - if you are using an iFrame to display a site that isn't yours, even for legitimate purposes, you have no control over that content - it can change at any time. One day instead of looking into an iFrame, you might be looking at an entirely different kind of portal.

RCS (Rich Communication Services) will bring a number of iMessage-style features to texts between Android and iPhone users. This includes things such as read receipts, typing indicators, and higher-quality images and videos.

The one thing that won't be changing, however, is the color of the messaging bubbles.

Short primer.

RCS is something that Apple initial help fund the development of. As is usual, when a bunch of companies get to gather to create a protocol it gets bogged down my too many cooks in the kitchen. This was the case with USB 3 or USB C or whatever and why Apple developed lightning cables. It is shittier than iMessage and currently encryption only works by sending everything through Google servers lmao. It basically does everything iMessage does that normies need but came out much later and is bulkier and the roll out sucks because it is based on carrier and Google support and there's a laundry list that I don't care to type up and if you're still reading this what the frick is wrong with you.

Q & A

Why is bubble color important?

It helps us in the dating world know who is capable of making smart purchases as well as an idea on how much they will be able to contribute in the relationship. I don't mind paying for dinner but if she expects for me to provide her gum after she blows me sorry girl :marseypeaceout:
