Free will being an illusion means self control is an illusion meaning that the "just have self-control/discipline" is not actually just a choice you can wake up and make one day without outside factors helping you reach that conclusion, so statistically there will always be people with this problem and its part of the human condition
Why would controlling yourself require free will? I have a strong urge from one part of my brain to eat cake all day and never clean. Other parts of my brain practice discipline and use self talk to convince myself to act right. I regularly talk myself into running, lifting, eating healthy etc.
All of that could be deterministic, but it still happens.
The part you choose to follow would inherently be determinstic then, so you wouldnt be controlling anything, just getting the impression you are because it is an illusion.
One part of your brain was informed one way as a result of everything leading up to now, one part of your brain was informed another way as a results of everything leading up to now, whichever wins out is because it is the stronger part as a result of everything leading up to now. The feeling of choice is simply how your conciousness perceives this series of events, but the result was never going to be different.
This delusion is part of what allows us to reach higher plains of thinking than the rest of the animal kingdom, but it is a delusion nonetheless
Self control is the ability to convince yourself to do things you do not want to do because they'll benefit you. It is not the ability to make non deterministic choices.
The exact illusion im talking about. Youre implying there is a real choice being made here, but there isnt. 'Doing things you dont want to do' is impossible. You simply wanted to do them and the illusion of "convincing yourself" is just your subconcious mind getting your concious mind to shut the frick up for 2 seconds so you can actually do it

And im saying thats not something people just choose to do, its takes outside influence. Otherwise theyd already be doing it.
