It's because the consumers of video games suddenly and unexpectedly became young and male despite years and years of black trans women such as Marsha P. Johnson building the video games industry from scratch when cis white men weren't brave enough to.
Who could predict that traditional video game tropes that have worked a million times in the past like lecturing the player about how to do push-ups as penance for misgendering someone would suddenly become so controversial and unpopular?
