It may not be literal powerscaling, but the entire point of the fic is to go "well, if these fictional people were smarter they would simply do X" with absolutely no regard to trivial matters such as any character's personality, their knowledge, or what actually makes for a good story. It seems to make a practical sort of sense they'd avoid picking fights among exiles, and that'd eventually marry into the delusional freedom mythos Dutch was building up. This is true but really I wouldn't call RDR2 an example of what the KiAtards are talking about here. It's a big budget game made for mass appeal, before the peak of the DEI era, so it was bound to have the main characters overall be goodie two-shoes in the eyes of millennials. Even if it had been made 10 years before or 10 years later the gang and especially Arthur would have their awfulness whitewashed.
But the game itself is written in a professional manner, with the fanservice, romance, and happy endings of fanfic writers being minimized.

They aren't really much a gang at all. We're just told that Blackwater was a horrible massacre but we don't see anything from it because it'd be out-of-character with everything else the gang does.
To me that's why the game narratively doesn't work. Only Micah acts like an actual bad guy. Dutch and Bill are even portrayed more positively than the first game. John, Javier, and all the newfrens are literal saints.

Strawberry and the Saint Denis bank job are nothing if not massacres. Pretty much every single mission involves two dozen dead people, only some of them the sort of "bad guys" you're meant to be cool with killing.

Fanfic mentality can adopt any politics but the biggest problem it has is that it prioritizes fanservice and wish-fulfillment, which basically appeal to the lowest common denominator when it comes to audiences.

What I hate is that since Fanfiction exists in a vacuum. Fanfiction and its fans are very less likely to be critical because they aren't professionals. Most of the people doing these are hobbyists that are self-taught. As you mentioned, the fans really only care about having certain ideas fleshed out rather than the quality and as such are not going to criticize authors for fear of "being mean". And they themselves are probably not equipped to even do so if they could. Writers are also already working in pre-established worlds with no need to build a setting themselves. Back in the day writers would try to submit their writing to magazines or publishers to get their name out there so there was some level of editorialization. And like you said, nowadays, it's a free for all and the "best" writers are simply the ones who are the most capable of writing the slop that appeals to the most people.

Being self-taught is fine IMO if you're drawing from instructional knowledge from legit experts. But self-taught fanfic culture has created its own artificial "academia" through amateur fandom projects like TVtropes and by those who oversimplify more complicated academic concepts in a way that's easily consumed as entertainment. There indeed is a point to be made about the traditional gatekeepers for writing being corrupt and misguided, but the current situations also has corrupt, misguided gatekeeping on top of an overall decline in quality.
Your point about ideas being fleshed out rather than quality is unfortunately the result of these turd writers constantly consuming the lowest form of slop (YA novels, comic books, cartoons, anime, wish-fulfillment genre-fiction etc) mindlessly. Even the the "high-level analysis" that they essaypost about on blogs and Youtube is usually just playing games of six-degrees between superficial things in their slop media to IRL concepts, making connections without really interrogating the use of those concepts.

I definitely agree that you can be self-taught but that's why I mentioned fanfiction being a vacuum. The writing is secondary to the fandom aspect, which in turns means there's no structure or criticism. You don't have writers trying to build each other up, teach things, learn things, etc. You just have fans that like writing slop for undiscerning fans who just need their next hit of gay yaoi shipping. Yeah, this is a byproduct of the overwhelming feminization of "writer" as a career. Girls who grew up doing weird shit on Tumblr are now entering the workforce and now pretty much all newly-minuted video game writers are women (source: I made it up but it's probably true), and this absolutely affects the narratives of games that were traditionally male-oriented.
The exception to this is for small studios, where either you have the writer+developer role combined (eg. indie games) or you have the company founded around particular male writers who are key to the product vibe (eg. Chris Avellone or whatever his name is.) All big firm writing from now on will be female-dominated and it will show, at least until AI starts replacing them.
