900% of stories of healthcare bankruptcy is almost assuredly from people gambling with how long they think they can get away with not paying for insurance and losing.

I would say they do have a job but Reddiors have zero ambition outside of doing the bare minimum so they can go home and play vidya instead of trying to get a career advancement.

There are some healthcare plans where if you don't read the fine print you can really get fricked. Example:

Had a kid a couple years ago, we were on foidwife's insurance. Figured it was state employee insurance, we're good, right? Well turns out that the max deductible still required 10% of all costs from the insured after that. $8k out of pocket as a hospital bill after insurance was a fricking surprise lmao

We were able to foot it just fine, but switched over to my insurance right after for a full coverage after deductible plan, and got a little more wise after that pain in the butt

In my student days in Boston, I would just claim my income was 0 and file taxes in my home state. Got free healthcare no questions asked, it paid for an MRI I wanted, PCP, had good mental health coverage, etc. Even freeloaders here have better healthcare than most of the world

The important thing to understand is that though most Americans are doing well financially, the majority also think that other Americans are struggling. There was this Economist article where they polled people and 80% said that they were personally doing well but also 80% said that most people were struggling. Every American thinks there are faceless masses of struggling impoverished Americans crushed under medical debt and inflation, they just haven't met any.

the big thing is demand has massively spiked in Canada w/ people getting old and massive boost in immigration, but gov has mostly just kept the growth rate in spending the same as previous years not significantly spiked it to match demand.

even though I'm libertarian leaning I'm an unironic supporter of public healthcare, but matching demand<> supply is always a massive problem and costs shift to everyone not just the biggest consumers (old dying boomers)

We've had shit healthcare under NDP, Liberal and PC governments. It honestly was probably the absolute worse during Bob Rae's NDP in the late 80s early 90s when they were laying off nurses and closing hospitals for “Rae Days” because they'd literally nearly bankrupted the system and had no money to pay healthcare workers salaries.
