still can’t believe we had a fever dream of several years where people took this shit seriously pic.twitter.com/3bGYV2AFDd

except it's not
It's not a caricature, it was drawn by this person
it's weird how you assumed I was talking about the art
You called it a 4 panel caricature. It's not a caricature because the artist isn't exaggerating anything. You were talking about the arte when you mentioned "4 panel caricature"
it's always very funny when people tell me what I meant by what I said. if you don't have anything other than intentionally misunderstanding me, be on your way
I was at many, many, many BLM protests
i think it's good to lock up murderers
A 2 month old was murdered by police but yeah glad we stopped caring
I'm glad we have prisons to put those murdering cops in
this, quite notably in fact, never happens. which is kinda a central tenet of prison abolition, yet another thing that scares you because you don't understand it. frickin dork
all of those things are good and will survive
i prefer not to give government handouts to kids earning 3x the median salary just cause they're angry they can't afford a yacht
We should have lighter sentences for all crimes across the board.
This reads very plainly as a right wing satire. Stunning to think it was made in earnest

The thing is you totally could abolish prisons. Romans for the most part didn't have prisons (it was reserved for political crimes) but they had lots of options to punish people. You just need escalating gradation of penalties starting with monetary penalty, corporal punishment, enslavement and death penalty. Then with death penalty we can have multiple tiers starting with strangulation and ending with crucifixion.
This is probably not what prison abolitionists have in mind

I've said this before and I'll say it again: corporal punishment works and is a far cheaper and less intrusive option than jailing someone for months/years for non violent crimes.

Does it? I honestly don't know, if you know a study or something I'd be grateful.
The only modern criminal justice system with corporal punishment I've looked at is Singapore's, and it's in addition to prison time, never a stand alone punishment. They do have super low crime rates, but it's hard to disentangle that from the overall harshness of the justice system, the demographics, the camera coverage, etc.
The guards are trained to do as much damage as possible per cane stroke. They relentlessly practice their technique, get swole, and compete with each other. They switch every five strokes so they can go all out.
The prisoner's flesh is split in 1-3 strokes, they piss and shit themselves by 8. If they pass out, a doctor will check to make sure they aren't literally dying, but it continues.
Max strokes is 24 but even half that will wreck them. Prisoners can't walk afterwards. It's cripplingly painful for two weeks at least, and they spend a month or two face down and immobile. Permanent scars and often permanent pain and other issues.
It's pretty fricked up.

Yeah the way Singapore does it goes a bit far. I was thinking more in line with the royal navy. The lash also drew blood and left scars but it instilled discipline without permenantly wrecking the sailors.

Maybe for processing, but the idea of imprisonment as punishment for commoner/pleb offenders was post-medieval. Even medieval Europe didn't have jails/prisons as punishment for commoners. It was closer to the Roman model.
