The fundamental problem is that our society judges value based on education. We have said for decades that A). Poverty is an outcome of ignorance and B). We need to eliminate poverty. So you have a system where we try to turn every American into a doctor or laywrr or faang software engineer making 6 figures and if you make a poverty level wage at McDonald's its your fault for being stupid and not getting a good job. This also leads into mass immigration because if everyone is working a high pay white color job you need hoards of illegals to do every other job.

The issue is this doesnt work. You cannot magically make every human a doctor or lawyer and even if you could there aren't enough jobs to go around. You cant solve the problem of poverty by just making everyone get a high paying job.

What we need to do is separate the wheat from the chaff. If a student is disruptive or doesnt care or is malignant to education kick them out of school and give them a living wage scrubbing pottys or flipping burgers. Then education can be focused on lifting those who can handle it rather then trying to force every square peg into a round hole.

This very much triggers liberals because they have a deeply ingrained classism which causes them to believe anyone who is uneducated is a lesser being who doesn't deserve happiness so suggesting that we shouldn't try and educate everyone is suggesting some people should be doomed to disrespect and poverty when in reality im just suggesting we treat everyone with dignity regardless of if they are "smart" or not. !nonchuds

You cannot magically make every human a doctor or lawyer and even if you could there aren't enough jobs to go around.

This is particularly true for women. The economic carrying capacity of make-work useless email jobs has already been reached. You can always use more laborers, technicians, construction workers, and stuff. We were told that when we shipped those jobs off to the third world we would create enough management and post-industrial positions here in the United States to make up the difference, but that simply isn't true.

This has created a negative feedback loop. Because we're producing too many college graduates for these email jobs, applicants need to find a way to distinguish themselves. The easiest way to do so is via credentialism, which is achieved through even more education. MSW, MPH, MA in HR, even most MBAs don't exist because they add meaningful value. They exist because its the only way for applicants to get the foot in the door to these limited jobs. Graduate degree debt as a share of student loans has jumped from being ~20% of all debt in 2000 to a majority of debt today.

This has created a negative feedback loop.

That's not a negative feedback loop r-slur. :marseyemojilaugh: a negative feedback loop is a self correcting feedback loop. What you're describing is a positive feedback loop. With negative side effects.

Even when women get degrees in non-email-jobs, they still end up working email jobs because they're not actually interested in the STEM field they got a degree in. "Women in engineering" groups are a cancer on women.

Another issue is school is so feminized that being a normal boy is seen as toxic. A lot of boys would excel going to hands on technical schooling ASAP instead of learning about the queer undertones of Shakespeare or what a Chinese emperor did in 1200.

Back when nationalism and centralization were invented, teachers would poke and prod 120IQs to leave their podunk towns and get some proper education (in the capital preferably). The bureaucracy needed more than just warm bodies back then.

Doing that today would be not only alien but for many immoral :marseysigh:

My school basically had applying to college as a graduation requirement lol

It wasn't as blatant as that. But we had to submit a "five year plan" to our homeroom teachers and had one on one monthly disucssions with them where they'd ask you about all the application waivers you could get etc. etc. until they wore you down and you got accepted to some rank 1200 regional college that was happy to accept 20k$/yr government loans

we knew this for forever until we educated ourselves into a lie

another part of why libs hate it so much, this lie is at the core of their belief.

And thus you run into the central problem with attempting to reform education in any way along these lines. It is axiomatic in policy discussions in todays society that identity classifications should not implicate anything in outcomes. And yet, there is no doubt in my mind should education reform happen along the lines being proposed here you would inevitably end up with more people of certain races in advanced classes and more people of other races not. And then someone sues alleging disparate impacts and you cannot possibly raise the defense that maybe races have different aptitude distributions, so you lose and the entire system gets blown up.

Basically this.

Really good article!

I agree mostly with the part that said nothing really matters. I think we should take that one step further, and just abolish school altogether.

If 7-year-old me could ask anything of his future self, it would be to conduct Anti-School activism/terrorism.

TBQH just do whatever UChicago Charter Schools are doing.

They are taking random lottery-selected kids from some of the shittiest neighborhoods and sending ~100% of them to 4 year colleges, including some of the best universities in the country. Even if what they are doing is "small class sizes and lots of money" they are turning that money into results, whereas plenty of school districts spend huge per-pupil sums and produce abysmal outcomes.

Tracking is good (imho) up to a point, but if you go too far with it you end up with weirdo gifted kids who graduated from their PhD at age 16, never had a friend, and crash and burn at life.

Do you think the abolishing of the DoE will help this cause? I think there's too much institutional inertia to stop the dumbing down of education.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

not really. I think it would be easier with a focused top-down vision, but that's not something the Republicans were ever really interested in providing or capable of providing well, frankly

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

Do you think that any sort of market-based policies for better outcomes would help? My priors suggest that the continual failure to tie higher education funding to any sort of meaningful results-based metrics incredibly distorts the entire system of higher education. For instance, law school tuition has a clear U-shaped curve when plotted against results. Schools with objectively worse outcomes charge students more (read receive guaranteed federal student loan dollars) than schools with better results.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

Market-based reforms are cool and all, but tbh I'll mostly let others focus on those. I'm interested in cultivating and encouraging a specific, focused vision.

If your education plan doesn't accommodate children who need alternative pooping spaces :marseyshitforbrains:, then it's not going to solve anything.

but seriously, good article. IMO the key part of a successful education policy is avoiding the crabs in a bucket mentality where students are discouraged from learning due to the overinfluence of their education-skeptical peer group.
