They may not have believed (or cared) if there was anything theological connecting them, but they certainly got that this was the same kind of thing in practical terms. Telling the peasants to tear down everything and rebuild society how they wanted. This is going to obviously piss off whoever is running society right now. And it's even more dangerous than Buddhists because they've got friends from Portugal and Holland, which may just as well be other planets.

Look at how Christianity was treated in other nearby countries. Now Korea and Japan are absolutely totally unrelated, not alike in any way :marseylaugh:, but at the end of Joseon in the early 1900s :marseyjoseon: the Korean ruling class had killed off lots of Christians and it wasn't working. Society was legit starting to unravel because people of all classes were starting to get pissed off. Peasants: Why do I have to take it up the butt from my landlord? Elites: Why can't my daughter go to school? Also they had some quasi-Buddhist movement that sprang up as a reaction to Christianity.

Then there's a big part of history that I don't feel qualified to talk about, but it ends up with the "Christians" having huge neon crosses lit up really light all night.

If we got any gook lurkers here, pls pls pls weigh in on this. We got some Koreans here but I don't want to lean on them too much. They might start thinking I actually liked TVXQ...

There was also a guy in China who declared himself the second coming of Christ and led the deadliest rebellion in the history of China, which is quite a high score.

That guy was so much like me. He had like 40 wives in his harem and he was tormented because they screeched at each other like animals. Women, amirite?

Srspost: Really good example to look into. Most of what is happening there is clearly following Chinese traditions. I'm not a China guy :marseyshrug: but this is reminiscent of earlier books about how to have a revolution that Second Elder Brother would have read about. (Romance of the Three Kingdoms, the thing where they tell you what your OOB should be.)

Anyway, my point is, there were huge huge problems in Chinese society at that point. They should be glad it was Christians who were the catalyst for knocking it all down.

May you be happy

I do not desire to be happy, for if I were not happy I would suffer from that desire.

Don't you not want to be reborn in a higher plane? It's not as bad as being born in a lower plane but being human is the most ideal for getting out of Samsara. Spending centuries in not!heaven makes that harder.

Being born in a pure land is different from being born in heaven. You will eventually fall out of heaven. But once born in a pure land your buddhahood is inevitable :)

Excuse me chud, purelands are not heaven but a special place where you can spend all day meditating, and it's not like we could even attain enlightenment in this age of flawed dharma :marseyindignant:

If existence is suffering, why do you want to be reborn at all?

Jump in the discussion.

That's the goal, to stop being reborn. Also why killing yourself is a bad idea: you're still getting reborn but with extra bad karma.

I've been listening to Ajahn Sona talks. I need to force my ADHD self to do meditation though.

I love Ajahn Sona! He's very wise. You should also check out Ajahn Geoff (aka Thanissaro Bhikkhu) who is also in the Thai Forest tradition. Listening to one of his bite-sized Dhamma Talks ( https://www.dhammatalks.org/ or if you like Apple podcasts https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/dhammatalks-org-evening-talks/id1569745165) is usually enough to cut through my ADHD and recenter my mind enough to actually meditate.

Ever read the mind Illuminated? I saw it recommended here of all places and that's how I got started

Yes! I love TMI. I especially appreciate TMI's structured approach to meditation and it's differentiation between attention and awareness. Being able to recognize and have different strategies for the different stages of meditation helps calm worries concerning progression and helps stymy the bewilderment you feel for when suddenly what was working before stops working. And differentiating between Attention and Awareness is more accurate according to modern Neuroscience and it makes more sense and causes less confusion than trying to stuff both concepts under one umbrella.
