NEW FALSE DOGE CLAIMS?
A friend knowledgeable about govt contracting noticed some DOGE claims of money saved that are... unusual.
I'm trying to follow his explanation. I might just share DM screenshots and let you all figure it out lol.
I haven't seen these reported.

They also claimed they saved $8b on something publicly when it was $8m https://www.nytimes.com/2025/02/18/upshot/doge-contracts-musk-trump.html

So many important things in your daily life run on Internet explorer crap that it's beyond not funny and proof that coders are lazy r-slurs who deserve to get replaced by AI

I know! Our work uses pretty much the same thing. They're now at two layers of other web software and that pushes and pulls data from the original one. It's all so wonderful!

It's because it costs less money to pile another layer of slop on top than to fix the shitty broken foundations. You watch, we're going to get
GovAI from DOGE powered by Grok brought to you by X
but underneath it will still be JSP on Oracle in front of IBM z/OS + COBOL.oops ping !codecels

This isn't just government either. I'm working with a client that has a bunch of "business critical" applications running on Win2K and 2K3 servers. If you ask them what they do or how they work, they have no idea. The people responsible for them left the company 15+ years ago and all anyone knows is that, if you stop them, everything fricking breaks.

I'll do you one better: our codecel still works at the company but there's no budget to migrate away from 20+ year-old servers

This is probably the underlying reason why this happens everywhere, "it works, don't frick with it, there's no money to replace it." At least you can hassle that guy if you need to understand wtf is happening with it though.

Wouldn't be so bad that it's old, if shit like that didn't so often also run on the most obscure, undocumented, proprietary piece of shit from defunct r-slur companies.

Southwestern Airlines was spared the cloud strike issue because they run on like Windows 3.1, same with the European train system. Probably the only high paying job in Europe is a Windows 3.1 Admin for the train system. Saw a posting for ~300k USD a few years back for it in Germany.

The social security files Elon and the chuds are chimping out about right now are from 1962.
They index the data in the files and then use cobol to filter/sort the indexes to produce data that is used for payments etc.

This but unironically. Remove JS from browsers, all HTTP requests should be server rendered HTML. If you want an app, make one for desktop.
