According to most of the cops on the /r/protectandserve thread, they had more of a duty to engage the threat. Its not a hostage situation if they're killing all the hostages, cops are specifically trained to yeet themselves at an active shooter.
Just look at the doody resource officer from the cruz shooting, he was just one guy who was armed but pissed his pants and hid during an active shooting and he's getting sued for it with good reason.
