This is obviously a response to a carppost over here, so feel free to read it for his side of the story (wrong).
All this happened due to Kristallmopt, with Aevann asking ex- what features they'd miss. Seeing deleted comments came up. It was made into an idea of a profile upgrade (purchasable in shop), where every poweruser would be able to see user-deleted comments (jannymopped stuff would remain invisible). It almost happened. I accidentally noticed it in codecel channel and said this:
It was then polled and despite carp trying to argue for it, rejected unanimously. Reasons? We're trying to avoid this site becoming a den of snakes where every turbosperg with 20k can go through your profile and find drunkposting that you deleted yourself months ago and use it to dox you. Also we don't want powerusers freaking out over minor shit and overwriting their entire comment history (which does happen more and more, annoyingly for readability of old posts).
This latter part led to a suggestion of making deleted comments just disappear from one's profile, as a way to make schizos less worried. We couldn't actually delete them from our DB entirely, for a variety of reasons, so this was basically just a visual bandaid to calm neurodivergents down a bit. Obviously it would only work if it wasn't public knowledge, so carp's spergout post made it pointless, and the idea has now been abandoned. You'll still be able to see your own deleted comments.
That part isn't a big deal. What is annoying, however, is that carp did argue for the former (bad) idea, while not saying a peep about the latter until the post that he made. Didn't vote against it, didn't say why this would be bad, nothing. Merely came on the site after it was approved and made its implementation pointless. That was supposed to show how our (((oligarchy))) is dysfunctional and we need a benevolent fish dictatorship, because (((oligarchy))) wants to take your features away. Also notable is that throughout that post he tried to gaslamp the userbase by claiming that we were doing it to be more like reddit (a position that literally nobody took or would ever take). This was what dominated his entire post.
That's about it. That's all that happened.
TL;DR: Carp is gaslamping you. Nothing will actually change, nothing would have functionally changed anyway.
If you accidentally post information that could get you doxxed you ought to do the smart thing and overwrite it, then delete it. Except that anyone who has access to janny privileges (including hackers) will still have the original version of your deleted-and-overwritten comment and dox you with it. If someone on the mod team is too unhinged and breaks down, if you wrong one of the jannies in such a way that they throw a tantrum against you, if one of the jannies is kicked out and they retaliate against the site, or if we get hacked - you are at risk of being doxxed.
There is no longer any precautions or method to prevent this from happening.
Remember all those times where the site glitched out and people were logged into random accounts, including admin accounts? Imagine if we have that glitch again and someone who is logged into a janny account decides to comb the database for doxxable info.
Governments, agencies, and companies already have regular scandals where the people you are supposed to trust have abused their positions of power and exploit the information they have of you. And that's normal people with jobs and families.
Do you honestly trust jannies of a gay incel cat cult to be less unhinged and neurodivergent?
This site is dedicated to drama. It is inevitable that somewhere down in the future, a janny is going to go apeshit and cause a scandal. Edit logging would turn it from a spectacle into a danger with real life consequences.
Moreover, they also planned on preventing users from seeing their own deleted comments, but would secretly still be able to view them and they were going to withhold this information from the entire userbase. They planned on deceiving every single one of you on your Right to Privacy and what happens to your information / who can see it / how you can control it.
Every single admin except carp are complicit in attempting to rob every user here of the right to know what happens with their data, their ability to control who gets it and who doesn't. Carp was the only one who voted AGAINST this measure, all others voted FOR it and wanted to keep it secret from YOU.
I don't care much about Carp. I don't get the cultish fascination some of you have over him. But:
carpathianflorist is the ONLY person on leadership who took a stand, prevent its implementation, and whistleblow on what would happen to your data. His "spergout" protected you from this invasive policy.

This meta infighting shit is lame and I just don't feel like getting involved or commenting on it in general; also I can't vote in those polls but I think I've made my position on this clear for whatever it's worth
But just for the public record I agree with you on this , people should be able to delete their posts if they want to, not have every single thing and every edit they posted stored in the DB forever
Edit; also I assumed jannys being able to view deleted comments was common knowledge. There should have been more transparency about that IMO

Yea I don't see that going over well unless the site is blocked in the EU
Admins don't understand what GDPR is or how it works.
But then again none of these people are working in enterprise areas.

What are the yuropoors going to do? Sue a site that's not hosted in their shithole jurisdiction? Sit the frick down EU pansies

Seems like you can configure cloudflare to do this. No need to do it in the backend

Why would we block from our end? Seems like very much the EU's problem if they don't want their citizens using our illegal website.

Problem is: the US and the EU have an agreement that allows EU to blast GDPR lacking sites. Either you block them on your end or get the Europeepee

Is there even a single example of successful cross-jurisdictional prosecution of this?

Drama is definitely not GDPR compliant lol.
IMO part of the purpose of having all this be an open source platform is to encourage transparency with users about things like this, and the fact that jannys can see deleted comments wasn't known to users is rather concerning, again I just assumed that was common knowledge. Users generate the content here, and there should absolutely be more transparency about what is and is not stored

The code would have to be...uh...readable and documented for that to happen.
Have you tried reading the current code? Don't bother I'll save you the effort :)

Comparing reasonable questions about the site's laissez-faire approach to security with the manufactured Groomercord bullshit that you and your ilk engage in is, quite frankly, an insult, and I reccomend you step down from your admin position effective immediately.

Honestly respect u for saying that more than I respect my simps at this point it's gotten out of control and I'm at the point where I'm literally annoying myself, idk how anyone can be entertained by it. Lame boring shit, literally just complete spam; unblockable removal requested, hopefully will be done soon, watch this go nowhere in two weeks, I need to touch grass

Dramatards have proven time and time again that they are as gullible and susceptible to peer pressure as the average redditor they love to make fun of, the only difference being that redditors drool over s*x workers/social media hoes while dramatards form parasitic bonds with one another.
As soon as some inside joke arises, it gets beaten into the ground by people who were never even in a position to have an inside joke with somebody so this is their form of social interaction with people or even worse, it gets beaten into the ground by people hoping to acheive some kind of internet fame hoping to fulfill their miserable social lives.
For all the shit people here talk about redditors, this website is filled with the worst kind, the ones that make fun of them not realizing they're literal textbook examples of them.
The frick am I still doing here.

I'm not here for the drama, the community or any of the gay shit, I'm here to feed my hatred for the 'different'.
Nothing fires up my neurons faster than wanting to snap somebody in two, this site gives me that in spades and I'm addicted to it, it's an adrenaline rush on command.
Like Homocracy told me the other day, I have front row tickets to every shitshow imaginable and I let that influence my judgement towards others.
One of these days I'll revert this account's name to the original one for the recognition and post the password for everybody to see, first come first serve.
