One week ago today I heard your name for the first time. I didn’t know you any better than I knew anyone I’d run into at the grocery store, but you and your story touched me: I saw a lot of myself in you. You were so upset, while he was laughing and chuckling and seemingly fine with the policemen. His behavior did not match the circumstances. That was not okay, not normal or even appropriate. You had real emotions. And that was okay. He was clearly not right for you, but it was so easy to miss. The policemen missed it too. So many of them missed it. He was good at convincing them that everything was okay. I'm sure he was good at convincing you as well.

We share nothing more than a name and a history of domestic violence, but your magnetic smile captivated me and thousands of strangers from around the globe. I'm so sorry that the last hands you held were violent ones and that we could not save you from them.

At a Zumba class?

This case and Gabby's death have really hit me hard. I do not know Gabby, but she is only 2 years older than my son. So, so young and full of life. Her death is such a loss for the world and the people close to her. Last night, I was at the gym dancing to a Zumba class, I was smiling and having fun and I thought about the fact that Gabby will never smile like that or get to enjoy her zest for life. She was too young to lose that opportunity. I dedicated the rest of my self care last night in meditation and prayer to Gabby Petito. May her soul rest in peace. And may her story change the world.
