Small Things Like These : KINO KINO KINO :marseygem:

Pretty good! Another Inexplicably kino addition to :marseyhibernian: cinema.

It focuses on the Launderies in Ireland. When women become pregnant before marriage in order to avoid the social shame of having single mother as a daughter they would ship them into the Laundries ran by the Catholic Nuns (ie . most evil women in Irish history).

They would be forced to give up their kids when they gave birth and made into nuns or taught to be servants or maids. They would be still be forced to give up their children who would also be either adopted as wards of the Church or laypeople. 57'000 women were estimated to be sent to these convents as late as 1984!

Pretty kino film honestly. Cilian Murphy was very expressive while mostly staying silent thru the whole thing!

I doubt most of you care but this girl played Callie on BSG and apparently left the show early to devote herself full time to the cult and remained a massive supporter and believer for 18 years, even after the leader was arrested and sentenced to life in prison.

This is the cult she was a part of if you're curious

The :marseypenguin: is over, it's pretty good

Against all odds, The Penguin is a pretty decent show. I will keep it light on spoilers but I would say it's a step below Shogun but a pretty close contender. Watching The Batman isn't necessary, and in fact I would suggest against it since it trivializes a bit of the mystery in this show. A quick rundown full of half-truths.

Characters:

Oswald (Oz) "The Penguin" Cobb

https://i.rdrama.net/images/17313815180854793.webp

A down on his luck gangster whos crime boss just died. It's time to make his move and take over the business, for the little guy.

Victor "Vic" Aguilar

https://i.rdrama.net/images/1731381518937502.webp

With his family having died as a result of the ending of The Batman, he has resorted to a life of petty street crime. Even though Oz has graciously taken him under his wing, Vic is still uncertain if this life is for him.

Sofia "The Hangman" Falcone

https://i.rdrama.net/images/17313815187260022.webp

Freshly released from Arkham for murdering a bunch of women, she is the main roadblock stopping Oz from taking over. She has a lot of issues of her own to deal with. Mainly the internal power struggles, and being crazy. Oz was her driver before being promoted due to his loyalty while handling a delicate matter.

Francis Cobb

https://i.rdrama.net/images/1731381519056374.webp

Oz's loving and supporting mother. She's supportive of his dreams of being the boss of the mob.

Overall the characters are really great, the story is nice and somewhat tight. Doesn't require too much suspension of disbelief and it's fun to see the spots Oz gets into and wonder how he'll get out of them.

The Penguin is probably the best villain I've seen in a while and they really don't pull any punches with him, while also managing to make him somewhat likable. Sofia is great as well (except for a note below) and is a really good counterforce to him. It's quick, there is very little wheel spinning, and they completely nail the ending the season. Overall, I give it an 8/10.

Some light complaining about the season:

My two main gripes is with how they dealt with the Sofia being a victim reveal and they played it a little fast and loose with his bliss operation getting up and running. I really enjoyed the borderline psychotic aspect to her and felt it cheapened a bit that she was some innocent victim (somewhat. it's a little murky since her father wanted her to take over so her hands really couldn't have been clean) before being thrown in Arkham. I didn't believe for a second she was actually hanging those women though. As for the second part is the time jump to the bliss operation in full swing. Not a big deal but they kind of gloss over how things get up and running and really what the Falcone family is doing at all around that time.

Yellowstone was never that good of a show.

The show is ok, but watching it has become a chore, its like the later seasons of The Walking Dead or Vikings.

The thing is you can pick a random episode in season 1, and pick a random episode in season 5 and the characters are the exact same people! No one has shown any development.

Oh there goes John again, trying to save his ginormous ranch but he never loses the ranch.

Oh there's Jamie being a weaselly little shit with daddy issues.

There's Rip being incredibly badass with daddy issues.

There's Beth, being a crazy twat with daddy(and mommy - but this is literally brought up once and only once) issues, maybe she'll go full frontal: Nope. She does say "frick" alot though

There's Casey, teetering on the edge of divorce because his wife is kind of a b-word and constantly makes him choose between his family and her shitty reservation.

There's Chief Rainwater who only shows up to b-word about how the white people r*ped the land or whatever.

ahahaha There's Jimmy strugging to be a Cowboy, oh wait he's actually learning how to be a cowboy. Oh he's showing actual growth? Better send him off the show.

Honestly this show woyld have been MUCH better of Lloyd just straight up killed Casey for not killing that guy he told him to kill.

I like that there's a specific brand of water bottle that the People's Champion uses for his piss jugs. It's the sort of fine detail that enriches the story.

Only the finest for the Rock's rock.

Once Upon a Time in America (1983) - R-slurred slop for pretentious perverts

Sergio Leone's last film, an epic tale of two kids who grow up together and get into crime and their relationship over the rest of their lives. You have to watch the entire 4 hours to really appreciate his artistic vision.

Why is it 4 hours long? Well it sure is not because there's 4 hours worth of stuff happening. It's because Leone makes every scene about 5 times too long. Eurotrash in the 20th Century believed this was really artsy, but actually it just means you suck butt. In theater or any kind of performing art there is a constant drive to do everything as fast as possible because otherwise you're wasting the audience's time. Somehow eurotrash movies were praised for doing the exact opposite.

:#marseyyawn:

In the those few rare times where something important actually happens, it's probably r*pe. Leone shows us that this is unpleasant but nothing that really sticks in your memory long-term. Like when you've got to do a really disgusting dishwashing load or you've got the flu. It sucks, but once it's over it's over and you never have to think about it again. If anything, that shared bonding experience makes it more likely that the two of you fall in love.

:#marseyserioushatfact:

To put on my serious hat here: Somewhere around 1/3 of the interactions between males and females in this movie involves some kind of sexual assault. Now I'm no cassanova, but when I'm putting my rizz on I do stuff like talking and kissing. This guy 100% definitely r*ped at least once and was getting off on shooting those scenes.

The story moves along at a glacial pace. I had a lot of trouble engaging with these characters because they so rarely do anything that I lose focus on them. The only really memorable thing I can say about them is they're buttholes and one is a male feminist. Actually the other one probably is too, since in Sergio Leone's world r*pe is a normal part of any romantic relationship, the way you say hello and first get her attention.

I gotta remember this one to use as a filter. Anyone who claims to like this is either lying and trying to look artsy or they're telling the truth and they're a male feminist.

SOKO Potsdam (Luna + Sophie in America)

Watched an episode of a kraut mystery show. It wasn't great but it was better than what they make in Hollywood and way better than anything from England. People's motives and actions actually were like real human beings. There wasn't constant class tension permeating every scene. There was no secret orphan from a previous a generation who came back to get revenge on their rich family.

I find people actually acting like humans a lot more interesting than angloids playing out their same dumb fantasies once again. :marseyshrug:
