I thought buying a 400mm lens would make me better at bird photos but it seems that I need more practice, and importantly, birds.

Shot on a Canon R5 in crop mode at 26,000iso because my hands are so shaky and I needed to get the shutter speed up with my EF 400/4L lens.

The cardinals here have been exceptionally robust and healthy-looking this year. Also seeing lots of bluebirds like the last pic over the past week or so. Nice!

I was gonna ask if you were using high speed film before I saw this :marseyxd:

you could try a cheap chinesium bipod and brace it on a branch or table

otherwise it might just be a matter of messing with the stabilizer/vibration reduction settings. Im more familiar w Nikon but I assume that yours probably has a couple of different modes on the lease and a couple buried in some submenu on the body itself

because my hands are so shaky

Get a monopod and attach it to the mount on the lens itself since that is probably now the center of gravity lol

Looking good man 😃. After taking 8000 photos with my big lens, I still suck but I can keep it very steady now at least :marseyspecial:

Looks good, does the canon or lens not have IBS? If not you can get a decent tripod that's light weight and carry it around attached to the camera for fast shots

I don't know if it's got a pooping problem but the body has IBIS. The lens doesn't though and my hands are very shaky lol. I do have a tripod and monopod but I find it harder to aim and fire when using one. Eventually I'll just get the 100-400 with in-lens stabilization.

I get that, when I take wild life shots I try to set up in a spot and catch animals as they arrive. It's a lot harder to do live shots

I also shoot with a 400mm and hate tripods, I only use one if I'm shooting video. Stabilization is a godsend with these lenses but I don't think woots one has it.

I've been thinking about a monopod though 🤔

I have a tripod that's light and has good range. I just flat out leave it on the camera and carry it around if it's a short hike.

I bet a monopod would be better tbh

That second picture is a Carolina Chickadee (edit: wrong, cheeks and bib contrast is too great) and the fourth picture is of a female Eastern Bluebird (much duller colours than their male counterparts) btw.

Does your male cardinal have a female counterpart that follows it? A cardinal couple can be fun to watch interact with each other.

How can you tell it's a Carolina Chickadee and not a Black-capped Chickadee?

You're right, it's a Black-capped Chickadee, contrast between the cheeks and bib is too great to be a Carolina Chickadee.

I was friends eith a cardinal couple who would hangout outside my window at work. The male was ralurred and wpuld see his reflection in the windpw and would dive bomb my office window everyday between 1 and 3pm while his foid looked at him with this same amusement that I did. Classic

I always found it cute how male cardinals evolved to be bright red for no other reason than that female cardinals are crazy about red boys
